OK
Three poor men who only have 15 pence between them go into a cafe and order a coffee each. Coffees cost 5 pence there and each man gives the waiter his 5 pence.
At that price the coffee is dreadful and they complain to the waiter that the coffee tastes like burnt toast scrapings in hot water.
The waiter goes to the cafe manager and tells him that the customers are complaining again.
Okay says the manager, I don't want any trouble, give them a refund of 5 pence, a third off the bill.
The waiter goes back to the 3 men.
The manager says you can have a refund, he says, slipping 2 pence of the refund into his back pocket, you can have a penny each, and he hands 1 pence to each of the three men.
So, each man has paid 5 pence and received 1 pence refund, they have therefore have paid 4 pence each for each of their coffees.
Now three 4 pences make 12 pence in total, the waiter has the 2 pence he slipped into his back pocket, add that together and you have 14 pence.
Where's the other penny gone? There was 15 pence to start with,,,,
