Are there two nations in Cyprus?

Postby uzan » Tue Jan 04, 2005 1:04 am

I beleive that there are two nations in cyprus because the turks have their own language, religeon and history(reach culture). This applyes to the greeks too.The greeks been ortodox minded are no different from the fandamentalist islam.I previously stated that the greeks are ethnocentric to put it mildly.

I am atheist, and my culture is unlike most Cypriots.
Do I belong to a third Cypriot Nation?

Armenians, Maronites and Latins also have their own language, religion and culture. Are they separate nations too?

Most western countries today have citizens with very different religions, cultures and languages. What does that mean?

You may have stated it. That alone doesn't make it true.

Some are, yes.
But that's not what you said.

There are two nations in Cyprus, nations do not make referanda to decide on uniting with their somehow seperated parts..

Or for example, Greek Cypriots, at least many of them voted NO to unite with the Turkish Cypriots not to spend a few pennies for the Turkish Cypriots while on the other hand Germans living in Western parts of Germany after unification spent around 1 trillion dollars to their eastern nationals. Also nations dont make genocide to their own nationals.

What must be talked about in my opinion is how to create a future Cyprus nation rather than trying to prove that sun orbits earth

The GCs voted NO, not because of pennies, but because the Annan partition plan legalized the results of the invasion and created an undemocratic banana republic which would be the protectorate of Turkey.
If you want the kind of unification that Germany had, I have absolutely no problem.

I dont believe the Maronites, Latins and Armenian Cypriots constitute nations.

Why?

because thats not how they view themselves, but I could be wrong, its a pity there are no Maronites or Latins on this forum, we could ask them.
You see identity boils down to how you define yourself, not how others define your identity. If I am not mistaken they voted to be counted as "Greek Cypriots" back in 1960, so I guess they are Greek Cypriots.

Should how you define yourself give you more or less rights compared to other citizens?
I have no problem how each citizen defines himself/herself. What I have a problem with is discrimination.

If the TC define themselves as a people distinct from GC as a people should they not be entitled to the same righs as a _people_? For you seem to deny that we are a people and thus we have no such rights as a people?

So if me and a couple of friends define ourselves as _people_ this means we should have a blocking power on whatever the rest of Cypriots want and be given a separate autonomous state?
