EU to end sanctions on North?

Postby donyork » Tue Jan 23, 2007 11:03 pm

The German presidency, as expected, has acted quickly (January 22) to bring the question of ending the economic isolation of Northern Cyprus to an end. Its draft proposal demands that this is done ‘without delay’. Would it not behove the Greek Cypriots to welcome this, thus gaining international goodwill (very much short in supply) and at a stroke reassuring the North that it can be trusted in negotiations on reunification. Spain, as some members may dimly remember, has just done that in relation to Gibraltar without surrending its claims to sovereignty. Here is a chance, even with teeth gritted, for the South to join the 21st century, and say goodbye to the old men of the 1960s — and not before time for goodness sake. A Turkish-Cypriot north, given the chance of economic parity, would make for a better partner in a reunited Cyprus, and economic parity is the cornerstone of a sustainable settlement where one party is a minority. Given the entrenched mindset of the South this will be difficult, but the prize is surely worth it...

Go on RoC, cut your own throat, use your veto.

How's that any better than saying 'until you rot'? Really?

donyork: i think any direct trade regulations should be implemented with a moratorium on the sale of ANY GC property? What say you?

Turkish daily SABAH (23.01.07) reports that the parliamentary delegation from the German Social Democratic Party, which is currently in the TRNC as guests of the Republican Turkish Party (CTP), said they believed that an injustice was committed against the Turkish Cypriots.

The German deputy Jurgen Walter noted that they came to Cyprus to be informed regarding the TRNC, because they do not have enough information about the TRNC and many discussions regarding Turkeys EU process are going on. Replying to a question, Mr. Walter said that it was a conscious choice to enter the island through Ercan airport, adding that there was no pressure on this matter. He concluded by saying that even if there was pressure he would have chosen again to arrive from Ercan airport.

Well done Germany, lets hope the next 6 months brings a little bit more to end the long and unjust suffering of the people of the TRNC.

If yo consider over 4000 new cars registered in 10 months as rotting, if you consider 27 world class hotels being built as rotting, if you consider 240000 smiling Turks and TC's as rotting then please let them continue rotting.

What suffering? I thought there was 240000 smiling Turks and 'minority in their own country again, thanks to Turkey' TCs??

It is miles away from Let them rot. Mine is a hope that they will not use the veto so this whole affair can at last move forward. Believe it or not I see this as a move that is good for both sides I just hope the RoC can see it that way. When I said cut your own throats I meant t is they that are saying they want unification and if they use their veto they will cement partition. I was just trying to be sarcastic.

i was under the impression that the tcs can export anything they want through the legal ports of the roc...so how is that changed anything?

i doubt ercan or any other port will be opening up, so it brings us back to the use of the legal ports of the roc.
