Nationality vs. Ethnicity

How can we solve it? (keep it civilized)

You got yourself a date,Mrfromng.

I have no idea where Shangri-La is (sounds like a hotel in Singapore!),but I know Doyle's very well. I have Champagne taste on a beer budget,as they say.Alas,my downfall...

The shangri-La is the old ANA. It is between the bridge and the opera house, the most amazing views ever. God I love Sydney

i don't care what you spin it to VP. We have lived for a great number of generations on that land. EVery single tree was planted by my great and great great grandfather...I'm leaving that property in my will to my oldest and they will continue life in Morphou as far as my family is concerned.

Under the circumstanses this may not be possible. What would be your reaction to such an outcome?

When things don't go my way I say "well, life's a bitch, then you marry one and then you die" and get over it. Can you do the same?

my reaction to such an outcome will be bitterness and a growing hate towards the people that took my home from me. I usually use the above phrase of life's a bitch generally when a test is failed or i'm passed a promotion. Wouldn't exactly use it to explain my feelings regarding all that was taken from me.

These are pretty much my points BirKibrisli, I hate to see the north becoming like the other EU cities in many ways, im sorry, I truly believe even tho we are poor we are lucky enough to live away a lot of the crap that the EU brings along with the positive sides ofcourse, maybe im very selfish but its my opinion. Im also not really fond of Turkey joining either, i think countries should be allowed to prosper without having to suck up to other imperialist giants, but i presume that is pretty idealistic... :?

eracles, I can understand your reaction to be a little more than "life's a bitch". But by the same token if the only solution is partition and this is the ultimate decision by all those concerned then there will be not a lot that you and I can do.

Wouldn't a substantial compensation suffice? After all you have set up a new home, a new life now and I would guess it is a good home and a good life. Can it not continue? Can you not for the love of your country and fellow man forgive and forget and enjoy your life with the substantial amount of money paid out to you?

Viewpoint wrote:This is all true so you should be far more sensitive and understanding towards our concerns and arguments, you are telling us to assimilate into GCs rather than Turks.

We are not afraid of Enosis as this has indirectly been achieved through the EU but the new fear and the GC stance just re-enforces everyday is osmosis, assimilation, the "RoC" no moves towards restart or negotiations, what do you have to say about these and what do you suggest we do to counter our concerns what safety guards do you want for your brother who eat drink and breath Cyprus everyday?

But I've never told you to assimilate into anyone,Viewpoint.
The choice I see is not between assimilating with the GCs or the Turks.
In fact my whole argument is against assimilation. I want us to maintain our Turkish Cypriot identity for long enough till our ethnicity matters little to anyone and we are all plain Cypriots...That is not assimilation. That is achieving a more mature and humane national identity. What I want is the GCs to assimilate with us and become Cypriots.Strictly speaking they have more to lose because there are more of them. Why do you and others keep calling GCs Greeks? They are not Greeks any more than I am a Turk. We are Cypriots who speak different languages.Religion matters less and less to most people (not spirituality but organised religion). Consider this with an open mind please,Viewpoint. It is my assertion that it would be more difficult to assimilate with the GCs because we speak different languages and believe in different prophets, than it would be to assimilate with the Turks, even without the influx of the settlers...Think about it and we will talk again when I am not sooooo tired. It is 1.29 am friday here.I always think I am at a disadvantage because when things get interesting it is time for me to go to bed...Good night all...zzzzzzzzzzzzzz

mrfromng first of all its not eracles..its DT. Secondly as you say there will not be a lot that you and I can do so what does it matter?

FOr the unification of cyprus i'd gladly sacrifice my home. I would not rest though if this partition was made permanent.

Sorry DT, I guess senility is setting in with me

Your attitude is the right one and should be an example to your fellow GC's.

Pyrpolizer wrote:I liked your using of "maybe". We are already on even ground if you haven’t noticed. You hold land we hold economy, recognition, and prospects. Any change to that and you kiss re-unification goodbye.

We had about 300 villages in Cyprus before 1974. Some were mixed. The chances of having a mixed village JUST IN THE CENTER of the buffer zone in 1974 were very limited. But hey we did have two. Pyla is one Potamia is the other! (near Tymbou)

Well i used the word "maybe" because i believe my guess is as good as yours and anyone elses, we are not on EVEN grounds, i dont think we are traders and you claiming that we should use certain factors of our nations as bargaining material, thats just ridiculous! In another words if you see us in that way than YOU kiss re-unification goodbye, we can do without you ...

And I have not met 1 TC who claimed that things were exactly "going well" before 74, you have to be dellusional to make such a claim, i mean what you think Turkey came in for fun?! come on man!
