School closure today

Postby 123456 » Thu Jan 18, 2007 8:04 am

Well that was fun. Getting up at the crack of dawn, driving one of my children to school, only to find that it is closed today apparently because the education minister popped his clogs yesterday afternoon.

Yes it is sad that someone died but am I the only person who thinks it is a little strong to shut down the schools over the death of a civil servant?

I could understand it if it was the president as public closures are expected for a head of state, but surely not for a minister?

Talk about short notice, if they were going to have a national day of mourning where they wanted to close the schools then it should at least be done with enough grace given to notify the parents.

Why are politicians lionized, I'm not talking necessarily just about Cyprus because it occurrs in many countries, at the end of the day they are public servants who are voted into their positions in order to do a job for the people, usually that job is only ever secondary to their primary motivation for joining the world of politics which is to further their own interests.

Then we go and treat them like royalty for some reason which only serves to bolster their egos and give them the impression that we are their to serve them not the other way around.

It is not like it was any other minister. It was the minister of education...

So if the minister for agriculture expired in office would they stop the farmers from working for a day?

I agree. This is ludicrous. If the Health Minister dies, the hospitals will shut!!! This country is so strange sometimes. What happened to parents who can't stay at home with their kids? I'm sure their employers won't be lenient and let their employees stay at home to look after kids. Yet again the school system puts the parents in a difficult position. Pretty certain the kids didn't even know who the Education Minister was. To them its just a holiday today!!!!!! CRAZY COUNTRY!!!!!!

This shows the level of culture in the UK. We are sorry that you are foreigners and you cannot understand our culture (and you do not even try) and you have the balls to make fun of it. Then you are wondering why you get Cypriots that are angry with you. If you do not like the Cypriot culture then move to san trope and let us be.

I think Niki was joking because they closed down schools because a minister died.
Probably they should have had a minute of silence as a mark of respect in all the schools.
Closing schools is not a high level of culture either.

And Strahd, for all that talk about your culture being superior do you wonder if everyone who has got the day off will be mouring that minister's death?(isnt that the reason why the closed the schools). But I will tell you people will probably be making souvlakia and enjoying themselves.
I understand your culture as well as any other culture Strahd, usually people don't care if they are not related or friends.
