"No really, which ones are the Turks?"

How can we solve it? (keep it civilized)

Does playing a fps game and always choose to play on the allied side make you an anti-German racist?

"No really, which ones are the Turks?"

Postby polis » Tue Jan 16, 2007 10:19 pm

Was playing Call of Duty on my laptop a couple of weeks back, so my niece (who is five and studies at an English speaking school with mostly foreign - i.e. not Greek - classmates, since she can remember) came up to me, watched the game for a few seconds trying to understand the logic of the exercise and finally asked: "OK, so which ones are the Turks?". I told her that in that particular game we were shooting at Germans (was playing in single player mode so don't think I had the option to play on the Axis side). "No really" replied my niece, "which ones are the Turks!". Maybe I should buy the kid some children stories about the 2WW.

Don't you think a Cypriot kid of five should be aware that you can have a perfectly good war without having to shoot at Turks? Or is she too young for that?

Sure, but waking up at five o clock one morning and seeing a Turkish war plane getting ready to bomb your home kind-of limits your options.

When you play in that WWII game you play against the racist fascists of Hitler so you can not be anti-German racist ;)

ever considered the possiblity of not fighting a war at all ?

Not fighting even when they invade you and trying to kill you and steal your property? I think you don't have a choice in that case! Aggressive wars are bad and defending yourself from them is necessary!

Great, so karma actually believes that for a Cypriot kid to think that war involves Greeks shooting at Turks and vice versa - and not of Britons shooting at Germans, Americans shooting at Russians, Turks shooting at Kurds, Iraqis beheading Western hostages, Hamas fanatics blowing up themselves along with a bunch of innocent bystanders etc - is a medical condition!

Not related to Cyprus Problem but I think war games are bad for children in general. Too much violence. Some hard core gamers in the USA even join the army to experience the real thing. Idiots! And because most of these games are made in the USA they are pro-USA and contain US propaganda in them. More than Hollywood films!

to be honest i think its rather twisted and sickening that a child at her age is already being brought up to hate another nation for reasons way beyond her comprehension, and this kind of upbringing is probably at the very root of the problem in cyprus, wether its in the south or in the north....
