There are hundreds of TC famalies form all over the world coming back to the TRNC or making preparartions like building a home ready for when they arrive. The life style and quality of life in the north is starting to attract them as more now than ever before they witness that their quality of life living abroad is worse than ours.
I do find it perplexing that the picture Bir keeps painting has no reference to what is really happening. It does seem that his one aim is to get the refugees back to their homes and sod the consequences (the consequences being us the Turkish Cypriots). With that in mind, who can help but doubt his intentions. Even with the government, he has moaned that the TRNC has no say with what goes on and the one time they take control and are now being vilified by the Turkish press over that bloody bridge, he uses that against the TRNC. We are waking up Bir and that in turn is saying to the government that they too had better wake up. They are responding.
I always said we have to deal with the settlers in a humane way,Zan.You have to give credit where credit is due.
Why do you guys think I have it in for the TC community,my own community???Because I think differently does not mean I wish ill for the TCs. I am trying desperately to save the TC from the inevitable...complete assimilation with the Turkish culture, and the loss of their true identity.(Well,as much as I can influence anything writing in cyber space!) Now if you see nothing wrong with that, and think you'd rather be somebody else than what you are, that is fine with me.But don't expect me to think and believe the same.
If you fail to see the real symbolic significance of Talat's going to Ankara to speak to the General about a stupid bridge, that too is your problem.
But I can only call the shots as I see them. And what I see is a community so paralysed with the historical fear of the "enemy" that it is prepared toabandon their true identity to find some imaginary and temporary safety.Elsewhere I described the difficulties facing the TCs (leaking lifeboat analogy etc),and I said they need help and understanding from their fellow citizens which they are not getting. There are more than one way for a community to meet their end,and I just believe we (the TCs) have chosen the easiest, least honourable way...If things prove me wrong,I Hope my soul will finally get some rest in my grave .But if time proves me right,I hope some of you will remember that silly, utopian Birkibrisli chap, back in the early 2000s who tried his best to warn you of the impending danger.I'd be long gone by then to say "I told you so"...
