concequently i will say no more.
i ll wait for your comments.... or what you liked the most

Quote:
Introductio by Erich Scheurmann

The writer called these speeches, The Papalagi, which means, the White Men or the Gentlemen. These speeches by Tuiavii of Tiavea were not delivered as yet, but the essence had been written down in the native language, out of which the first German translation was made.

Tuiavii never intended to have his speeches published for the Western public, nor to have them printed anywhere at all. They were strictly meant for his Polynesian people. Yet I have, without his consent and definitely in disregard of his wishes, taken the liberty to bring these speeches of a Polynesian native to the attention of the Western reader, convinced, that for us white people with our Western civilization it could be very worthwhile to find out how a man who is still closely bound to nature sees us and our culture.

Could we have a synopsis please, for those who (like me) just can't be bothered to wade through the whole webpage?

Thanks,
Pete

cypezokyli, I have printed off the speeches and have enjoyed their content, the perception of the white man and his culture is brilliantly portrayed by the author, what a pity we are not able to recognize the simplicity of life in the same fashion, I personally think all members should have a copy, thanks for drawing attention to it.

you know bir, i first read it as someone who lives that way of life. its simply amazing and shocking what he sais about jobs, things, time, newspapers etc...

now i am re-redaing it as a cypriot and I cant but stop thinking what Tuiavii would have thought had he come across words such as : "bizonal biccomunal federation" , "confidence building measures" "united nations security councils resolutions" , "ruling of the european court of human rights on the aresti case" , "turkish rrepublic of nortern cyprus" , "republic of cyprus" ,"Ethniki Organosi Kyprion Agoniston" "türk mukavemet teskilati", "president" "vicepresident" "parliament" senate" .....

i believe that he comes along and in one sentence he pulls the carpet under our feet

In our language `lau' means `mine', but it also means `yours'. It's almost the same thing. But in the language, of the Papalagi, it is hard to find two words that differ so much in meaning as `mine' and `yours'. Mine, means that something belongs entirely to me. Yours, means belonging entirely to somebody else.

can you imagine what would be left of the cyppro and all the fancy words that come with it, if we had no knowledge of the concept "mine" and "yours" ?

the whole problem would have no basis any more, and all of our "arguments", would simply sound sooo ....rediculous.

perhaps we should all moove to the pacific

Once school holidays are over, and life goes back to normal,I'll have the time to do Tuiavii justice...I hope. :)

cypezokyli, I am somewhat surprised that your post did not receive the consideration it deserved from members, I have enjoyed reading the book and found the content most enlightening.
I wonder if the reason for such a poor response is due to the fact that it initially appears to be an interpretation of the 'Holy Bible', if that is so, I think members should be assured that it is far from it and deserves cosideration, I agree with your appraisal and think the final summing up was a brilliant portrayal of our own deficiencies, I do urge members to have another look..........................Best wishes and good luck Always.
