UK troops in Pafos brawl; Cyprus Mail hiding the full facts!

Postby Markos » Mon Jan 15, 2007 10:25 pm

According to a news report by a Cyprus TV channel (I think it
was MEGA), the three "foreigners" involved in the brawl were
British troops from the Akrotiri base. Why is the Cyprus Mail
not giving us the full picture?

Six held in Paphos brawl

Six men were arrested in Paphos during the early hours of yesterday morning after a huge brawl broke out outside a local nightclub.

Thirty people were involved in the fight, which broke out under as yet unknown circumstances, resulting in the injury of six of them.

According to police, the incident occurred at around 2am on Ayios Antonios Street just outside a night club. The fight involved Pontian permanent residents of Paphos as well as foreigners. As the brawl escalated it moved from outside the club to a nearby parking lot where unknown individuals caused £2,000 damage to a parked car, police said.

The injured six – three of which were Pontians and three foreigners – were taken to Paphos general hospital’s accident and emergency department for treatment. Following their release from hospital they were arrested. A Paphos court later remanded all six in two-day custody.

Paphos CID is investigating.

Who do you reckon was at fault? I blame the locals. Ok, Brits have a bad name but even three blokes wouldn't pick on 20 plus, surely?

Stupid enough to start trouble with 27 other guys?

Do us Brits cause any bother over there normally?

And worst ;) I am sure they would do that even when not drunk! But of course some of the Pontians are not any better. So you had the ideal circumstances for something like that to happen!

I read this story on-line too. The Cyprus mail seemed keen to point out that Pontian Greeks were to blame and not say anything about the brits involvement. Could this be refusal to "bite the hand that feeds"?

I live near Aldershot ("home of the British Army"), and there are a number of negative incidents we hear about which involve squaddies.

That would be inline with everything that Cyprus-Mail writes ;) In another article they wrote about some British dog that served in Afghanistan being transfered to Cyprus because of psychological problems! :?

Well, according to another story in the cyprus mail (sorry don't have a reference to hand) they are "believed by most people to be a bunch of thieves and criminals"! I am starting to think perhaps the cyprus mail is a bit like the UK's Daily Mail!

You can get an impartial definition from wikipedia or similar on-line resource

Yes stupid enough to start trouble with 27 other guys that are stupid enough to get into it and so on. Simon, I am not saying you brits cause trouble like that because you don't. For some reason, it is the soldiers. I wouldnt say it is because they are stressed or anything because they are in Cyprus not Afghanistan, and this has been going on since I can remember. I saw a number of incidents like this since I grew up in Episkopi which has a base close by.
