There is a great book that has been published with photos from 1889 when a "Gentleman" travelled around Cyprus. The pictures are amazing. Unfortunately the title evades me. It's funny but all Cypriots dressed the same and we all looked Middle Eastern, Arabic in fact!!!! I'll try and get the title.

The look was because of 600 years of Ottoman rule in the region and the amalgamation of traditions and styles as per region. The Ottomanophobes do a great injustice to the history of the region and how many different styles of dress, music arts and many other things that were developed and evolved from one end of the empire to the other. If you look into it you will see a similar type of dress, and the one thing that is still evident today, music, that has gone back and forth across the empire. I find it fascinating and if you look out for the folk music festival that is held in Turkey every year, you will see all the dances and music that I am talking about. The Ottoman influence and the influence on the Ottomans is quite breath taking.

That photo must be from before 1900. I have some photos from early 1900s and they look more modern than that! People in that photo look very dark. Do you think this is because they had to work in the fields all day or something else?

Zan , the Ottomans came to Cyprus in 1570 or 71 , how come in 1900 they had ruled for 600 years , I make it 330 years , were you perhaps including nearby nations , then I apologise for the correction.
