I am american, and a Ph.D Students in Economics and Finance. I am about to move to Cyprus-Limassol within the next month.

Jan2007,
Do you have Dual Citizenship? American/Cypriot?

If not you will have a VERY hard time finding work here in Cyprus. As noted in many posts in the past Non EU Members are given LAST PICK of jobs, even if you are highly qualified you will always be last to be considered. This is because of all the new countries coming into the EU, most recently Romania/Bulgaria, Work permits are harder and harder to come by as citizens from these countries will do the jobs for next to nothing here. By law any job available has to be open to.. 1st Cypriot Nationals, 2nd EU Member applicants, and 3rd and last NON EU Members.

I've been here for nearly a year now mate and still no work and no work permit. Not sure if you also know this but you are Legally only allowed to be in the country for a maximum of 3 months. If you are planning on living here you must apply for a Temporary Residence Permit. If you have questions about what is needed to apply for this message me, I can tell you exactly what you need.. and this again.. is not a easy thing to get your hands on for NON EU..

Just wanted to let you know what you're getting yourself into by coming here, so there are no surprises.

Just curious , do TC's have equal opportunity as a GC,s for a job in the ROC, with equal qualifications. Since we are on the subject, does TC's have better chance for a job, than a EU member. Thanks.

In theory (!!) there are no TC or GC, only EU Nationals! In theory there should be no discrimination between EU Nationals whatever their origin. I ma not sure if non-Cypriots can work for the Governmentt though.

(However, as 'in theory' when it comes to pay and conditions, females have equal status to males and also 'in theory' people should not be paid below ther minimum wage, I am not sure how far 'in theory' works!)

Hi Lan2006! Did you apply for a PhD course? Did you apply to the state university? Did they accept you? And about the salary...what exactly are you looking for? I think if you can give me more info I can help you with those! But to be honest orokliniservices is right. Is difficult to find a job if you are not an EU member! How good is your Greeks level?

All EU citizens are eligible to apply for Government Positions as long as they fulfill the minimum requirements. The positions are advertised weekly in the Government Gazette. Other citizens can also apply but there are some restrictions (for example contract period). There is nothing to stop a TC to apply for a job in th the ROC (even Government). There are already several working in Schools (for example the English School in Nicosia).
