Bi-Communal Youth Forum

COMMON DECLARATION

We, the Youth Organizations EDON, CTP Youth Branch, NEDISY, BDH Youth Committee, NEDIK, TKP Youth, NEOS, BKP Youth Movement, NE.OI, YKP Youth, members, KSP Youth Section, of the Bi-Communal Youth Forum, during our meeting on the 4th-5th December 2004 in Ayia Napa decided to declare the following:

1. We re-affirm all our previous common declarations and our commitment for a peaceful solution of the Cyprus problem on the basis of a bi-communal, bi-zonal federation, with a single sovereignty, one international personality and one citizenship as provided in the two high level agreements of 1977 and 1979, on all relevant UN resolutions and the International Law. We are looking forward to a united Cyprus, where Aquis Communitaire and UN Charter will safeguard the basic human rights and fundamental freedoms as well as the political equality of the two communities.

2. Our struggle for peace and reunification that has been going on for years has come to a new point with the referenda on the 24th April. The referenda were not the end of the road. The end of the road will only be the solution and the reunification of Cyprus. At this new point we will continue to struggle for a solution based on the Annan Plan the soonest possible.

3. We share a common vision with regard to the future of our common homeland. A vision of a free, united, independent, sovereign, demilitarized Cyprus where all its children, Greek Cypriots, Turkish Cypriots, Armenians, Maronites and Latins will live in conditions of peace, security and prosperity. We therefore protest the anti-peace, nationalist and chauvinist propaganda and actions which emerged in both communities during the period which preceded and followed the referenda,

4. After the result of the 24th of April referenda, we call upon the international community, particularly the UN and the EU to undertake, as soon as possible, a new initiative concerning the Cyprus problem through which ways and means will be sought in order to safeguard the legitimate concerns of the Greek Cypriot community in the UN plan without reopening the whole plan for negotiations, which remains the base to achieve a comprehensive solution to the Cyprus problem. Such a development will greatly facilitate the pro-peace forces in the Greek Cypriot community to encourage the people in order to reach a solution in the period ahead. Within this framework, both Greek Cypriots and the world’ s peace forces must express their solidarity even further to the pro-peace forces in the T/C community that fight against the status quo in the island in order to maintain and strengthen even further their willingness and determination for the solution of the Cyprus Problem.

5. We, with the experience of the dark days due to the chauvinist policies going on for years, reiterate our determination to double our efforts for the reunification of our common island. A solution is now more than ever necessary to all concerned. Time is not working in favour of either community. We announce to the International Community that the pro-peace Cypriot forces shall never give up in their struggle and are now more than ever determined to bring their efforts for peace to a successful outcome,

6. We, as pro-peace young forces of both communities, stress the necessity of achieving a solution, as soon as possible. We declare to the people of Cyprus and to the international community our common will to continue and reinforce our struggle for a peaceful and prosperous island in the framework of a united Cyprus, full member of the European Union.

Well done to the political yout of Cyprus. I've always heard their names but never have seen their presence on any discussion boards I'm a member of...

Political youth of Cyprus, why don't you join us, participate on the issues we are discussing?

I really would like to see the capabilities of Cypriot youth. The words and declarations without actions don't lead us where we want to go...

Is that the reason you don't participate on the issues we have been discussing here? I couldn't understand whom you implied with your words...

Happy new year to you too!

Do you know how much time it has taken them to prepare that "common declaration" scrutinising on every word and every comma? What they do is just show their good intentions and their wish for a re-united country, and nothing more.

I think the real friendship comes only after you shout as much as you can what you think is right for you, and after your ears have been drilled by the screams of your compatriots about what they think is right for them.

Don't be surprised when some members of those youth organisations ever start talking about the Cyprus problem to hear the TCs saying the Cyprus problem started in 1963 the Gcs saying no it started in 1974! That much they know, that much they would talk....

This declaration contradicts itself in many cases.

For example it is either the Annan plan or the "free, united, independent, sovereign, demilitarized Cyprus".

Can the Annan plan change to that degree?

Anything is possible if there is real intention for unification and it wouldn,t be taking 30 years in the making.
