Meddlesome Priests

How can we solve it? (keep it civilized)

Meddlesome Priests

Postby Issy1956 » Tue Jan 09, 2007 1:48 am

I was much amused when I saw the this report. It now appears that the Archbishop now not only speaks for his GC flock but also knows what TC's want as well. Politics and religion are a potent mix and no good usually comes from mixing the two. If this were a muslim religious leader making these comments there would no doubt be a storm of protest.
I propose that religion be kept out politics and the Archibishop mconcern himself with spiritual matters and keep his nose out of the Cyprus problem . Do people agree?

Greek Cypriot archbishop calls Ankara 'enemy'

Greek Cypriot Archbishop Chrisostomos II made controversial remarks about the status of Cyprus prior to a meeting of Turkish and Greek Cypriot religious leaders, which was later cancelled.

The archbishop said that the Greek Cypriots' enemy was Ankara and not their neighbors. He stressed that a unitary state was to be demanded and that Turkey insisted on a separated island with two states.

He also said that even Turkish Cypriots did not want a two-state regime. All the powers, according to Chrisostomos, were aware of the fact that the island cannot be separated but all were hesitant to defer the matter to Turkey.

In his statement for the local Mahi daily, the archbishop explained some of the demands he was planning to communicate to Ahmet Yonluer, head of the Turkish Cypriot Religious Affairs Department.

"We are sincere and will, of course, demand our churches and graveyards and the permission for their restoration and maintenance," said Chrisostomos.

He also said the struggle for survival in the period from 1955 to 1959 brought the Greek Cypriots together and they sacrificed everything, even their lives.

The archbishop remembered the times when they hid National Organization of Cypriot Fighters (EOKA) members and were arrested and beaten by the English as honorable and said he missed that period.

What is even funnier is to read Zaman to learn what the Archbishop (or any GC) said or wants.

But actually I don't see anything very controversial on what Zaman claims the Archbishop said.

Ankara (Turkey) being an enemy is controversial? I mean this is a textbook case of an enemy, a good real world example of the word. If those that occupy your country and violate the sovereignty of your country and your human rights are not the enemy, then this word should be erased from the dictionaries.

However I totally I agree that religion should not be mixed with the Cyprus Problem. We have enough issues to solve as it is.

True. Religion is regarded by the common people as true, by the wise as false, and by the rulers as useful.

Church and religion have always been separated, even in the days of St Paul's missions. What you mean is separating Church, religion, State and politics. Like in your USA, where even your money has a religious annotation, where your Pres take his oath on a Bible, where your Congress opens with prayers, but where it is illegal to open a schoolday with a prayer.

Here it is worse, as the Church is intertwined with politics but has little to do with religion, as related in the Holy Bible, if the recent election of the new Archbish is anything to go by.

This is another evidence of how the GC people are brainwashed en mass by their own leaders be it the politicians or the church or whoever. Yeah right, the enemy is Ankara alone, the TC "brothers" have nothing to do with it. It is not them who joined the invading mehmetchiks in 1974 stubbing us in the back while their mehmechik brothers were throwing us napalm bombs. It is not those "fighters" who got points to share the loot of our lands and properties.

Nothing to do with their still ALIVE AND KICKING dream for taksim, for the grabbing of our lands and properties and our ethnic cleansing.

The Archibishop as well as all the GCs MUST WAKE UP!
