Invasion or intervention?

How can we solve it? (keep it civilized)

Postby BigDutch » Fri Dec 31, 2004 3:39 pm

During the build-up to the Referendum i remember reading on a collection of views from many sides on the BBC website.

A Turkish "poster" wrote in reply to a GC "poster" something along the lines of :

"There was a war, we won, you lost, get over it"

Now i can't find the page now but it stuck in my mind, and i wondered whether this was the general consensus in Turkey on the current situation in Cyprus. If it is then it would suggest that the activities of 1974 were in fact an invasion, both from a "GC" point of view and a "Turkish" point of view.

Well, in my head the term war refers to armed conflict between two states. And bearing in mind Henry Kissinger's account (“In 1974, thanks to the stupidity of the Greek junta, the Turks hit the jackpot: there was no government in Cyprus recognized by anyone, so they didn’t attack a legal government, but a man internationally considered as a murderer and there was a government in Greece that was internationally outcast, supported by no one."), it doesn't even really matter if it was an invasion or an intervention.

What matters is that we gave them a reason to hit us and they did. Had we not given them a reason in the first place, we wouldn't be talking about it right now.

I know it sounds heretical, but, well, I think it's just as important for us Greek Cypriots to remember that we had a share in this, too. That is the very reason why the compromise that we are going to have to accept, sooner or later, will have to be painful. We fucked up, and we have to pay for it.

Erol,
I would like to wish to you and all the other friends on this forum, to have a happy, healthy and peaceful New Year.

My New Years Resolution:
If I make it to Cyprus next summer, I would make great effort to meet in-person with as many of you, who would like to meet with me.
Talking with each other without ever having an eye to eye contact, is very difficult way to communicate. Talking to people with whom you have no idea what, who and where they are coming from, is even more difficult. I have no hard feelings with anyone. I sometimes get carried away, simply to challenge and tease, as an attempt to get to know a "faceless" the person, I am addressing, better. I apologize.
Peace on Earth... and in Cyprus also!

I have always been willing and indeed keen to meet (anyone here) in person. I believe that such meetings could only lead to better understanding and help reduce some of the natural limits of electronicaly mediated communications and interactions. When I first started posting on forums like this one I made many calls for such face to face meetings but nothing came of it. I accept your appology and would wish you a happy and healthy new year as well.

I believe it was most definetely an intervention. I would compare it to the Liberation of the Low countries by the Allies during WW2, except they didnt liberate the whole island. If they had done this, then they could have installed a Cypriot interim govt and then called fresh elections in 1976 say. Also there were no trials for the G/C war criminals that still live as free men in the South.

some may have confessed or expressed regret but there are no trials. there are no plans for trials and these men are free, some of them even boast about the killings. all this from a "country" that calls itself the "free areas", it certainly is free for war criminals.
