Turkish Speaking Cypriots are a minority in the North

How can we solve it? (keep it civilized)

Postby miltiades » Fri Jan 12, 2007 12:30 am

Lets instruct the UNITED NATIONS , EUROPE , COMMONWEALTH and the European court of human rights that Cyprus does not exist because 40 thousand foreign troops as well as VP dp not recognise its existence. Make sure to mention that the ONLY NATION ON THIS PLANET that does not recognise Cyprus Is TURKEY and VP !!!
Stop being so bloody stubborn man , there is one one Cyprus potato , Cyprus bamia and Cyprus aggouri or halim , halloumi . There are no Turkish Cyprus potatoes , perhaps Cyprus veg such as VP but most definitely one Cyprus .The one that every single nation on earth knows.

This to me is the real Cyprus Problem - G/Cs will never accept the status quo as the starting point for a negotiated solution but the longer the division remains the more difficult it will be to solve. Turkey's concern for the T/Cs is a poor second for her desire for to a colony/military base on Cyprus, a base that will help prevent "Greek encirclement". There will be a solution eventually when the T/Cs are a political minority. Turkey will agree to a much smaller "share" (maybe 15% or less) of Cyprus in return for legal partition and unopposed entry to the EU - that may be an offer the Greek Cypriots would not refuse.

So what you are saying is we need to settle before we settle. We cannot turn back time. If we cannot negotiate from today then we cannot negotiate at all. Kind of sick really.

No I'm saying that we should not negotiate because of what has been achieved by force. I fear that in the case of Cyprus "might is right" and Turkey, not the Cypriots, will get what it always wanted, a part of Cyprus to call her own. Turkey will eventually do a deal with the G/Cs in order to gain admission to the EU and the T/Cs will be the biggest losers. In another 32 years time there won't be any G/Cs left who want to "go home" and partition will be more acceptable to the ROC.

The north is Cyprus and so is the south we just have Republic on one and the Turkish Republic of Northern on the other. How do you suggest we create a level playing field? this could also mean all armies out, or all settlers/immigrants into Cyprus since 1974 out, these are examples of what we would need to do in order to bring about an equal balance that will allow both sides to negotiate more fairly. Obviously you do not agree as you see the rights you enjoy so freely as being a tool to apply pressure on me to accept your demands. Well hello aint gonna work, been 33 years and no go we can continue as we are for another 100+ years...

Just follow the history back and tell me at what point you would like to start and where you see that nothing has been achieved by force we will begin to negotiate. Fair?

Sounds good to me no armies but are you willing to send back all the people you granted citizenship to in the south since 1974? allow direct flights? recognize us or derecognize yourselves?

I'd like to start in 1950, before Henry Hopkinson told the British Parliament that Cyprus would never achieve independence. Had he not made that statement it is unlikely that the EOKA campaign would have started. In 1960 Macmillan made his "Wind of change" speech where he acknowledged the fact that the Empire and colonies were a thing of the past and during the following decade many colonies gained their freedom, Cyprus could have been one of them and the same princilpes of majority rule would have applied. Most of the intercommunal strife in Cyprus was a result of British divide and rule tactics and her desire to hang onto the bases. There would have no need to reward and protect the T/Cs with disproportionate powers and we would not be in the situation we are intoday today.
Of course this does not take really meet your criteria "where nothing has been achieved by force" (does 1570 ring any bells?) but I'll let that one go.

And why should those GCs create a separate state in the north of Cyprus and appoint TCs to govern them? I would say let each household build its own Government.
VP have you become totally nuts?
