Who is a Cypriot?

How can we solve it? (keep it civilized)

Who is a Cypriot?

Postby humanist » Sun Jan 07, 2007 10:00 pm

Is it someone who is born in Cyprus? Someone who has at least one parent born in Cyprus? Someone who was born in Cyprus but now lives overseas? Someone who was born overseas but has at least one parent born in Cyprus?

All of the above would qualifiy you to play for the Cypiot National Football team or compete for your country in any sporting activity,if both parents are Cypriots and you are born in Cyprus you are 100% Cypriot and i think when your born outside Cyprus but both your parents were born in Cyprus your are a least 50% Cypriot and 50% of your new country of birth but legaly on paper you are actualy 100% of that new country of birth. It is really upto each individual how they want to call it,but legaly where you are born is your nationality regardless of what your parents nationality may be.

Well what can I say Brian -- well spotted
I've always had the opinion that you don't need to buy a book to read the story --- why fill up a book shelf when you can borrow a book and give it back when you have read it

I wasn't born in Cyprus. Neither do I have any Cypriot parents. But, according to my passport, I am Cypriot. :)

if both parents are Cypriots and you are born in Cyprus you are 100% Cypriot

I agree with this! So where you were born and live is like 40% and each of your parents is the 30%. But if you were born abroad it also depends how they brought you up. If you were born in UK and both your parents are Cypriots but they didn't bring you up with Cypriot language culture and values and they didn't send you to a Cypriot school in the UK then you will be less than 60% Cypriot and you you will be more British than Cypriot.

I believe that if any of the above circumstance is the case then your are Cypriot. No percentage attached.

You can't be Cypriot when you are more something else. To be Cypriot you have to be more than 50% Cypriot! Otherwise you are something and a bit Cypriot.
