THE ARCHBISHOP has said the Church would turn over some of its property to the government to meet an older obligation to the government that had been agreed upon when the state began paying clergy wages.
Interior Minister Neoklis Sylikiotis told state radio that he had met several days ago with the Archbishop, who had told him that the Church would fulfil its commitment to transfer over land to the state in return for the government placing clerics on its payroll.
Phileleftheros reported that the total area of the transfer would be 15,000 donums, a figure Sylikiotis was unable to confirm.
“There is a discussion under way, a specific effort, to decide how the land will be given over and in what areas but I don’t have any specific evidence on that yet,” Sylikiotis said.
“I am not sure in other words about this number [15,000] that has been reported in the publication.”
The Interior Minister said that his meeting with the Archbishop took place in the presence of the Land Registry director.
Maybe all Church property should be transfered to the state? I think too much money is what corrupts the Church!
