Hi,
Glad to know you're returning after 43 years. You will certainly be surprised by the changes over here. We've been here for five years, having retired from the UK, and, even in that short time, we notice big changes.
First of all, I don't know where you are coming from, but do you actually need a RoC passport? Do you have a European one, as that is all that is needed? If you do, that will also get you through to the TC area, if you want to visit.
Now, as to where is the best place or places to stay, the road system is so good that you could actually stay in, say, Limassol, and be able to reach both ends of the island easily in a few hours. There is now a motorway which links Paphos - Limassol - Larnace - Nicosia. It's a lovely quiet motorway too, so you don't have traffic jams to worry about.
I don't think you will find any motels on the island, so small hotels are probably your best bet. It is compulsory for hotels to display their tariff, so you won't be ripped off, not that that's likely to happen in Cyprus anyway!
Shops, etc, do not normally accept other currency, but it is very easy to exchange your euros, etc, for local currency, either at the airport or at any bank.
You need have no worries about the language. Just about everybody on the island speaks fluent English (and often French, Italian and German). The only exception may be some of the more elderly locals, but even then, they've usually got children or grandchildren who are only too pleased to show off their knowledge of English.
There seems to be no hard and fast rule re tipping - we do leave a small tip in restaurants, etc, but that's all.
Afraid I can't help you re lawyer's fees.
Hope you enjoy your trip here - it's a lovely island.
