As always you guys have hijacked my thread with your petty Cypriot disputes. So what places would be nice to visit in the South?

You got it almost right, miltiades. Only my father was a school teacher. I was born in Istinco (Kios) near Polis, and lived in many villages all over Cyprus till we ended up in Nicosia in 1963.The rest, as they say, is history.

Some of us Paphians in the forums are planning to establish the Independent Paphian Republic of West Cyprus, for those Cypriots who want to live together. You would be most welcome to join us... :D

After January 1, the government said it was considering the issue and stated as recently as Thursday that at first glance there did not appear to cause problems as they were legal EU citizens.

However, a day later, Government Spokesman Christodoulos Pashiardis said ambiguously that Bulgarian Turks living in the north could cross but should not ignore the possibility that they could be arrested for illegal entry into Cyprus.

“Bulgarian Turks who reside in the occupied areas have the right to cross over to the government controlled areas, but they cannot rest assured that they will not be prosecuted for illegal entry and residence to the Republic of Cyprus,” Pashiardis said.

He said the fact that they were technically EU citizens with all the relevant rights and obligations did not cancel out the fact that there was a law in Cyprus concerning illegal entry through the north.

“Based on these laws, Bulgarian Turks have committed the penal offence of illegally entering to the Republic and have possibly violated the property rights of the Greek Cypriot refugees,” he added.

I believe somebody in the forum informed you early on what is the right legal way to proceed with this case ;)

Now all the laws (EU/RoC) can be applied. That was the right move.

People can enter through the Turkish Republic of Cyprus, and Cyprus has waved prosecutions of EU nationals entering in this manner since 2003 under the European Union’s Green Line Regulation on the movement of goods and people, which states EU citizens have the right of free movement within the EU.
According to a Legal Services representative, Nicoletta Charalamidou, the Green Line regulation doesn’t concern the matter of EU citizens entering Cyprus from the north, but the ability of EU citizens to cross the Green Line freely. She added that the Republic could not restrict movement across the Green Line, but it is at the state’s discretion to be able to set fines if people enter from an illegal point. “What was made clear is that any EU state has the right to impose fines,” Charalamidou added.

Technically? Well, you administration better swallow the fact that Turks can be EU citizens, and this entitles them to all the rights that other EU citizens have.

Now all the laws (EU/RoC) can be applied. That was the right move.

EU law sipercedes roc law, and in case it is in contradiction with local law it is the only one that is applicable. The Greek Cypriot administration is obliged by law to facilitate, not obstruct the movement of EU citizens.
