As far as I know it is a type of Mamba. Keep well away because they are very dangerous and are about as angry a snake as you can get. As someone has said it can be called a whip snake because it whips you and then comes back for more. Was it quite a long snake? I have heard a few terrifying stories from my parents over the years and one involves a Mamba that whipped my uncles’ donkey to death because it trod on the snakes tail. Sorry to scare you if it was not this type of snake.

Not that old chestnut again. Whip snakes are so-called because they resemble whips, *not* because they can whip donkeys to death. Don't believe me (and if you're Cypriot then you probably won't), then try googling for 'whip snake' or contact Snake George, who will be only too pleased to give you further information based on observation and science, as opposed to folk-lore.

Oh - and as far as I am aware mambas are from a totally different family of snakes, and are generally poisonous (which the large whip snake isn't).
