What solution do OTHERS want for Cyprus?

How can we solve it? (keep it civilized)

What solution do OTHERS want for Cyprus?

Postby Sotos » Wed Jan 03, 2007 2:24 am

What solution do you think the big players of our world want for Cyprus? Some EU countries seem to want just any solution to remove a headache. UK and US clearly want a Turkish solution. What about other big players like Russia and China? Are there any countries that don't even want a solution?? Do you see any changes in the future that could affect the interests of some major players and make them change their opinion about the Cyprus problem?

Hi there Sotos, unfortunately I cannot see a solution for Cyprus. We have come to a sticking point. Greek Speaking Cypriot refugees want the right of return (even though most will probably wont, becuase they either have made it well in the South or have imigrated overseas or simply and stupidly do not want to live with Turkish Speaking Cypriots.

Turkish Speaking Cypriots want to remain in Greek Speaking Cypriots refugee property becuase they feel thay are safer living in a state that was set up to protect them.

Turkey has another agenda and what to do with the hundrets of thousabds of settlers, what about the strong army they have there.

US & Uk don't give a hoot really so long as their interests are being met ... they could not give a rat's ..... about 200,000 Greek Speaking refugees or 50,000 - 60,000 Turkish Speaking Cypriots.

Personally I would like to see a Unified Cyprus where all cypriots are treated eqaully, have equal economic, social and educational opportunties and then its up to them where they go from there.

In my view we need to go back to 1960's constitution because I believe it to be the fairest dispersal of political power. However I can appreciate that Turkish Speaking Cypriots have a different experience and may not agree to that.

I would say that Russia is traditionally a friendly to us country and would definitely not like Turkey (the good ally of USA) to control Cyprus.

China has the problem with Taiwan, and therefore they would also like to see a solution with of a true unification.

The developments in Cyprus in the next few years could be very interesting. Those that believe that because the balance of power benefits them now, it will always benefit them might get very disappointed.

Sotos,
Surely what solution WE want for ourselves is much more important than what outsiders want. I should imagine what outsiders would like any solution that doesnt threaten their own interests. So as long as they have their bases and listening posts they are happy and sod the Cypriots. Peace has to be made between us.

I dont think there is any need for a solution. As stated above, the Greek Cypriots are happy over here and the Turkish cypriots are happy over there. If anyone actually bothered to ask the ppl then they would stop all these stupid talks here and now. US and UK only care about strategic positions for military bases and the fact that oil has been found in Cyprus' waters, thats the only reason they are in on all this. As for the rest of the world, we are only a small island, so why would the world think about us?

joanna,

how many of the 180,000 GC refugees have you asked if they want a solution?
And how do you translate this "they are happy" thing?
