Congratulations to Mr Talat for his decision to take down the Ledra bridge ... I urge Mr Papadopoulos to take note of this good gesture on behalf of our Turkish Speaking Cypriot brothers and sisters

I don't know about the holidays, humanist, but there are more developments on the bridge coming down. Paps said the government will take down the barricades once the bridge is down:

to go straight to the story.

Fingers crossed!

Kurban bayram is the Islamic New Year, the Islamic calendar is a lunar calendar and therefore is 10 days shorter than the one we are used to. This also explains why Ramazan moves through the seasons. When I was younger and fasted it was during the summer but now it is autumn.

Kurban Bayram is the same as Eid al Ardha, but it actually commemorates the Prophet Ibrahim's (Abraham) willingness to sacrifice his son Ishmael. Kurban/Ardha translate as sacrifice from Turkish/Arabic.

It's not actually the Islamic New Year, the last day of the Bayram falls on the 10th day of the last month of the Islamic calendar, but it's close. As the Islamic calendar is a lunar one, the timings against the Christian calendar change from year to year. This year the Islamic New Year's Day is 20 January 2007. It will pass virtually unnoticed in most parts of the Islamic World as it is not the usual tradition to celebrate the arrival of a new year.

Maybe it’s to do with the prohibition of alcohol.

I thought we were suppose to "Build Bridges" between the two communities in Cyprus, and not tear them down.!

Perhaps PappaD should have said, "Briiiiges, weee donnn neeed nooo stinking Briiiiges".
