Gas Heaters

Postby orokliniservices » Fri Dec 29, 2006 9:24 pm

Thinking about buying one of those ugly big gas heaters to warm the house. I've never used one before and just want to ask a few questions and get a feel for what you all think of them prior to buying one.

Do they really smell like gas like everyone says?
Are they safe?
Do's & Don'ts when using it

Any feedback is as always greatly appreciated.

PS - Hope everyone has a super duper New Year!

I assume the gas fires you are alluding to are the same as the four I have in my own house, they can be a bit smelly if you do not allow sufficient ventilation, however, as far as efficiency in heat production is concerned, they do quite a reasonable job and , used sensibly, can create quite a comfortable atmosphere. DO read the instruction leaflet (usually supplied) and hopefully you will be satisfied with your purchase, I have found them to be economic and are quite reasonably priced. Happy (warm) New Year to you and all members. :) :) :) :) :)

Is there no where in Cyprus where you can purchase the 3/4 bar halogen heaters (1200/1500 watt) i used to sell them in my shop at £25/35 each and they only cost 2/3p an hour to burn, you can even get them now with remote controls,to ajust the heats settings or have them oscalate from the comfort of your arm chair, and there is no smell,i would be lost without mine,as they are the best, cheapest instant heat fires on the market today.

I find all the halogen heaters are quite worthless unless you are sitting directly next to them. To comfortably warm my front room i'm afraid i'd need 5 or six of these halogen heaters.
Thanks Elkio, Yes i would assume we are talking about the same type. Big black unit with 3 burners. I understand the whole ventilation thing, however.. what i don't get is.. if you have to keep your room well ventilated say by opening a window.. then how warm is your house gonna actually get with the windows open!!

orokliniservices, there is no need to leave the windows open all the time, I find that initially the heaters do produce some smell which disperses quite rapidly with a little ventilation, I also think that there is a difference between the gas product itself, you will find from your own experience, which one is suitable for your own needs.
I do believe that they are probably the best form of adjustable heating available to us in our circumstances here.
Try one out and see how you get on with it, I personally have two in my lounge area and two others in other parts of the house, they seem to be adequate for my needs, regular cleaning is of course a necessity to ensure that any smells are minimised, hope this information is of use to you, best wishes. :) :) :) :) :)

I use 2 of them and find them excellent value. I don't really notice the smell, only when I first switch them on, then thats about it.

As for the halogen heaters, don't like them at all. They are around £10 over hear, and thats £10 too much.

Carbon monoxide is a byproduct of combustion from any fossil fuel system. As such, the device should be vented so that exhaust fumes exit to the outdoors. (NB, the vent should not be directly under another window).

I'm not suggesting that you not use the system, just take the proper safety precautions. And install a CO detector with battery backup just in case.

Well folks....... all i can say it must be bloody cold in Cyprus at this time of the year or your individual houses must be the size of castles, but in fairness its probably the fact that there is so much tileing and concrete in the majority of Cypriot houses,so in the summer their a bit cooler but in the winter they can get very cold indeed !!!!!!!
As for the my suggested halogen heaters being no good i've sold 700 in the last 3 months and its -2 at present in Dundee,so if they were no good i cant understand why i sell so many? and have had no complaints, only praise and repeat sales !!!!!!! But in fairness again the houses in the UK are constructed with heat retension being one of the most imortant features, being that this country is so f*cking cold for most of the year !!!!!

Hi UKMAN,
Thats a wicked price, as i buy the by them by the pallet and the cheapest i can ge them for a £5 a piece + vat. Whats the max weight when you can take into and out of Cyprus when flying, over and above your normal 20kgs and how much extra does it cost.
cheers Brian.
