What is good value in Cyprus or not?

What things do you think are good value in Cyprus, or not.

I think spirits, but especially whisky, seem really good value. They tend to be generic no name brands but we tried them on my father in law and he could not tell the difference between these and the famous makes.

Bad value for me are the pirate DVDs. They may be 5 for a tenner, but when the sound track sounds like a station announcer and the picture jumps, if you can see it for the people milling about in front of it, I would rather pay full price and get the quality.

Unfortunately for you I am one of those ppl who think that Pirate DVDs are bad for everyone. They push the price of the true copies up ( to recover costs lost by having it available on pirate ) and - like you said - can be of very poor quality.

If everyone stopped the pirate DVD trade tomorrow I think ( IMHO ) that the costs of true copies would come down.

Piracy is even more of an issue when stores insist on renting and selling region 1 dvd's which are not legal here and most dvd players sold are region 2 which means you have to track down an all region hack before you can play the darn things....

Commercial piracy does indeed hurt everyone, however the private pirates are of minimal concern as they probably wouldnt buy the film anyway..

And who has never recorded a program off tv and lent it to a friend, or copied some music onto cassette or mp3....

Fresh meat is exceptionally good value. However, although cheap, prepared meat (ham, salami etc.) is not because of its atrocious quality.

Taverna meals, away from tourist areas, are often very good value.

Imported wine and cheese are generally bad value and most local wines are either too expensive or are plonkish.

I was out working and stopped at a Cypriot 'cafe' on the outskirts of Paphos town last week - in area where tourists don't go.

I just wanted a snack for lunch as I was on my own...

A chicken kabab (sp?) I asked for --- How much food!!!

When I asked for the bill - £6.00 !!! (plus the cost of a beer (of course).

The owner asked 'was everything OK'

NO - I said... The next time I come here I will ask for the childrens menu!

Jo was none to pleased when I didn't want any dinner that night...

the food is reasonable in most places (back street tavernas) and the drinks are cheap(ish) too....
Meat is cheap in the supermarkets and things like toilet paper, tissues, paper napkins I found cheaper than Australia
Local produce like cheese, yogurht is delicious and good value
Gold is cheap as are diamonds and the craftmanship is beautiful!
Utility bills are much cheaper than Australia
Hairdressers/Beauticians are much much cheaper

Not good value
Coffee - I was paying australian equivalent $7.00 for a crap cappucino - what a rip off!!!
Fashionable food - rip off and tasteless - Cypriots should stick to what they know best....souvlakia

Paphos Airport - a big rip off.

Two very dry sandwiches, pack of crisps and can of tango (x2) = £12 CYP
Two cans of Carlsberg lager = £6 CYP.

Discraceful
