Knife Sharpening ??

Postby skyvet » Fri Dec 22, 2006 7:11 pm

Does anyone happen to know of somewhere in the Larnaca area that sharpens kitchen knives please?
I've tried all the shop-bought sharpeners, and they're mostly useless, just as I am with a steel.
Wishing everyone a Happy Christmas

Do you know anyone who is a chef? If there is a hotel local to you they may have a chef who is good at sharpening knives, or they may have someone that goes round the hotels to sharpen the knives. My partner is a chef and over here there is someone who travels around and charges places to go in and sharpen their knives, and does a really good job. Long shot but maybe worth a try!

Try the town centre, opposite the indoor market. There is a small steelworks that sells skewers, BBQs etc. Try them him, maybe he can help you?

Skyvet -
Go to any hardware/ironmongers and ask for a roller knife sharpener, you just screw it onto your wall and run the blade through the sharpening rollers and it automaticly sharpens the blade for you,as i used to sell them in my shop they cost around £1.50/£1.99. An other idea is most electric can openers nowadays come with a knife sharpener built into the back of them maybee one of your friends or a neibour has one.

I agree, those sharpeners are pretty much the best, but the blade might need honing after a few years use...

Steeling is only a temporary "fine sharpen" eventually the knife will need a proper sharpen using either a roller or a grinder...

The knife sharpeners using the alternately spaced "coins" is pretty good as well, but that wil make the blade uneven quickly... even if it is darn fast at shapening..

Going slightly off-topic (no apologies), does anyone know a good cutler's in Nicosia or Larnaca that can provide a set of GOOD quality kitchen knives in a block. I don't want the tin rubbish that supermarkets sell but something with best quality steel blades that can keep their edge for more than five minutes and can cut wafer thin meat or fish without snagging the fibres.
