"O'Malley claims: "While most people think the ' Cyprus problem' begins when the Turks invaded in 1974, its origins are in the early and mid-60s when the U.S. began its involvement in the region".

As Craig and O'Malley tell the story, Secretary of State Henry Kissinger conspired with the Greeks and the Turks to first foment a coup in Cyprus using right-wing groups aligned to the then military dictatorship in Greece, which enabled Turkey to invade the island on the grounds that they were "protecting the ethnic Turkish population" (none of whom were Turkish citizens).

At the same time, the Nixon administration had been paying Turkey not to grow opium, or at least that is what The New York Times told us, claiming it was part of the White House's "war on drugs" (the first "war on drugs", not to be confused with the Reagan-Bush "war on drugs" in the 1980s). Craig and O'Malley say that the Turks asked the U.S. if they would mind if Turkey invaded Cyprus . Kissinger then told the Greek military dictatorship that the U.S. would not mind if Greece invaded Cyprus. This is how the events unfolded".

Who does not want to accet responsibility for her country's involvement in the various wars that have impacted on the World's political arena and human suffering.

A most interesting article which should be read and considered objectively rather than objectionably, (in my humble opinion). :) :) :) :) :)

uh..read this

Cyprus's rags to riches story is nothing short of a miracle. In just a few decades this tiny industrious nation with its highly educated population (Cyprus has the highest per capita number of university graduates in Europe and the third highest in the world) built world class industries in transportation, shipping, banking and telecommunications. Today the G.N.P. per capita income is over $15K. All of this was done with no external aid from anyone, least of all, the United Nations.

what happened to EU;s money? is arafat the nephew of the guy who organised the armenian genocide, the killings and smirna and recruited muslims for the 13st Jihadi Waffen SS in ww2?

All people must learn the name of Haj Mohammed Amin al-Husseini, one of the worst scums that history has met.

humanist, i am flattered that you started this thread in my honor. (BTW, there are two "L"s in GoriLLa)
i don't understand: "Craig and O'Malley say that the Turks asked the U.S. if they would mind if Turkey invaded Cyprus . Kissinger then told the Greek military dictatorship that the U.S. would not mind if Greece invaded Cyprus. This is how the events unfolded". " it sounds to me as if Turkey told the US of it's plans to invade, and the US told Greece perhaps they should invade. if this is the case, it would appear that had the US not been involved, the entire island would now be Turkish. ????

GG since there are so many topics devoted to you would you care answer some questions

1. Do you know where exactly Cyprus is on the map?
2. Do you know it's about 12,000 miles away from NY?
3. Do you at least have any European roots, and if yes which are they?
4. What is your interest for Cyprus, what you are really upto oin this forum?

The reason I ask, is because it's kind of strange to see a totally irrelevant American (out of 250 million Americans) messing around in this forum.

We have some Cypriot women living in the US in this forum. Their usual contribution is "hello here are your drinks, drink and stop shouting so much".

So what's your contribution, the venetial blinds questions?

ok after taking another quick look at the link, i have to say it has been written by a very moronic israeli who seems to think palestinians should learn something from the greeks and that they should "just stop whinging and get a job" basically.

its very clear that he has not even spoken to a turkish cypriot, let alone visiting the northern half of the island....
