money transfer agencies?

Postby zebedee » Fri Dec 15, 2006 3:45 pm

More questions!!
Does anyone use a reputable money transfer agency to bring over wages from the UK each month? Are they better value than just doing a bank transfer?
Thanks in advance!

Cyprus banks are thieves and vagabonds. I used to get our Swiss pensions sent to a Swiss franc a/c. We were charged CHF 30.- each per month. I remonstrated to no avail. CHF 720/year. I now get them paid into a Swiss bank a/c and I do an electronic transfer once a quarter for both our pensions, charges paid at source: cost? CHF 20/transfer. Difference? CHF 640 or ~£230. The greed of the local banks is infinite. And I let them know why I changed and why their greed has lost them revenue.

I have used Sterling Exchange very quick and efficient service, Also gave the best exchange rate. I was going to set up a regular transfer ie on a monthly basis but the rate you get from all companies is lower. With Sterling Exchange I call them once every 2 months and the rate is much higher.

ok, bear with me here, money isn't my forte!
If I ask our uk bank to do an electronic transfer to our cypriot hellenic (sterling account) account, once a month on the same day, am I right in thinking i will pay the UK bank to do the transfer then pay the hellenic to do the exchange at their daily rate?
If I use a money transfer agency, I pay the uk bank a transfer fee to get it to them, then use their exchange rate and they drop it into my (cypriot pounds) hellenic account with no charges from the hellenic. Is this right?
What is the time delay in both systems? I need access quite quickly so i can pay rent etc in cyprus.
Is it worth it for say 2K a month to use an agency?
thanks all, Lisa :)
