Drugs in Cyprus??

Postby orokliniservices » Wed Dec 13, 2006 1:34 pm

Just a question about drug abuse in Cyprus, I don't hear much on the news about drug abuse in small villages, mainly in the larger ones like Nicosia. Recently I encountered a man who appeared to be od'ing on heroin (track marks up his arms and a bottle in front seat with a needle and spoon in it) We called the ambulance and police and he was taken away, the police took his vehicle (which might I add he was driving while in this state) Just wondering, is this normal to have such hard drugs in such a small village? It's a bit scary to think that this is happening outside your front door...

Drugs, like pollution, know no boundaries. Penalties in this country are pretty tough (unlike SE Asia, where they are VERY tough). I think the term is zero tolerance.

Cyprus is kind of small. and i would think drug abuse and alcoholism would be more prevelnt (per capita) in a smaller village than a city. it's like in Alaska, all that land, not too many people, alcholism is the highest there than in any otehr state of the US. nothing better to do. also in poorer areas, it's the poor man's escape.
what are drug laws like over there anyway? what are the marijuana laws like? (such a harmless drug, really)

where i came from in the UK, drugs where absolutely rife. it has increased over the past five years, to a very worrying level. people i know who are 40 something, who you think lead normal respectable lives can all of a sudden shock you when you find out they have gone bankrupt, due to a heavy cocaine habit
it is also a very worrying trend amongst teenagers and considered normal to be taking hard drugs by the age of 14.
that's one of the reasons i wanted to get away and come here, to get my 9 year old son away from it, before it got to him as well :( !!!!!

It doesn't matter whether it is marijuana, speed, cocaine, heroin, whatever, if you are caught, even with a tiny amount, it is prison without suspension. One speed tablet or ¼ gram of marijuana will get you at least 3 months. A quantity sufficient to exceed personal needs, as judged by the court, will automatically make you a dealer, worth 5-10 years, as will small quantities of hard drugs. Prison is no sinecure here, either, or so I'm told! The Central Prison is overcrowded and is rife with abuse by fellow-prisoners and, Amnesty International says, by warders, as well. In the tourist season, there are people caught at the airport nearly every week, despite warnings.

However, you could try Malaysia, Indonesia or Singapore: you will get your neck stretched there, even for a small quantity. Draconian, but effective!

No drug, prescription, OTC or "recreational", is harmless if you abuse it.
