Turkey to open port, aiport to Cyprus traffic -EU

HELSINKI, Dec 7 (Reuters) - Turkey plans to open a port and an airport to traffic from Cyprus as a step to meet its commitments to the European Union in talks on membership of the bloc, EU President Finland said on Thursday.

Presidency spokesman Mikko Norros told Reuters: "I can confirm they sent a message to the Foreign Ministry to say they are opening one port and one airport."

The message was received on Wednesday, just as EU ambassadors were about to start discussing the EU position on Turkey. That discussion was postponed until Thursday.

Finnish public television YLE said that in return for Turkey's move, the EU would reconsider its proposal to slow down negotiations on membership, citing EU diplomats.

The executive European Commission has recommended suspending eight out of the 35 policy areas or "chapters" into which the membership negotiations are divided, and not concluding talks on any sector until Turkey fulfils its treaty obligation on Cyprus.

      I thought you are an independent country. They will get something in return for Turkey, their own country, the continuation of their accession process. What the independent "trnc" has to do with this?

I'm sure there's more to this story, than meets the eye. I have a feeling, there's going to be a lot of upset GC's, when they learn what was given to "TRNC" in return, or else, the airport is going to be somewhere in Eastern Turkey, perhaps VAN, which is hardly a holiday getaway and a sea port somewhere on the Black Sea. I can see all the GC's packing their bags already.!!! ( Excuse me for my "black" humour).

read the following link http://www.iht.com/articles/ap/2006/12/ ... key_EU.php

its a stand off one against the other... the EU can take it or leave it, now the pressure will increase on your side. Well played Turkey...they have put the cat amongst the pigeons yet again

You can consider that proposal as rejected already. So why are you so happy about it?

Im just impressed with Turkeys move, if its rejected then she will claim well the offer was there if accepted then they have scored a golden goal at the last minute, Im just interested to see how your administration will react (99% rejection) and what the EU will do to apply pressure? the cat has arrived so the pigeons will fly all over the place looking for a way out

But they seem to woken up and are now reconsidering it, maybe they see it a way for killing 2 birds with one stone, getting Turkey to open ports and keeping their promise to the TC people.
