are we really tht surprised? Elko and paaul12 who seem to have taken the prize of "Award for jumping the gun" and celebrating like a couple of idiots a "masterful" stroke thatno one has bought, everyone is slowly rejecting and in the end will leave turkey in a bigger mess than it is now.

Its very simple. Turkey wants to join a club
Club has rules....follow rules and you can join......simple. Turkey needs to open ALL ports and ALL airports with NO time restraint and with NO conditions. In exchange they can continue on their accession process which the Government of Cyprus would love to see them achieve.

Turkey responds to a steady menu of EU deadline options with its own serving. The move from a defensive diplomatic diet to an offensive of low-calorie fare puts on the plate an offer of limited port openings to resolve the ongoing Cyprus row

ISTANBUL - Turkish Daily News

Turkey passed the diplomatic ball back to Brussels Thursday with a fresh proposal to overcome a deadlock with the European Union over Cyprus.

In the latest twist in the complex diplomatic traffic holding Turkey's EU bid hostage to an opening of ports to Greek Cyprus, Turkey is offering to open one port and one airport to traffic from Greek Cyprus for a period of one year.

The offer was leaked to the Finnish press Thursday. Reports suggest that in essence, Turkey is responding to deadlines from the European Commission and other nations to resolve the ongoing row with one of its own. On the new bill of diplomatic fare: a partial set of port openings for one year, and then Turkey will judge the EU's action on long-standing pledges to ease the diplomatic isolation of Turkish Cyprus.

In the move from a defensive to an offensive position, Turkey issued two conditions: First, fulfill pledges on Turkish Cypriot isolation. Two, revive talks on a comprehensive solution for the island under the auspices of the United Nations. Failure will result in closing the single seaport and airport on offer if the EU sits on its hands.

The written proposal was sent yesterday to EU term president Finland but does not fully explain what Ankara means by easing of the isolation of the Turkish Cypriots. But diplomatic sources said Turkey had made clear in non-official contacts that it expected action regarding the Port of Famagusta and Ercan Airport in Turkish Cyprus.

COREPER to continue discussing Turkey’s Cyprus proposal
The Greek Cypriot administration has already rejected the Turkish plan, saying it is unacceptable.

BRUSSELS - The Committee of Permanent Representatives (COREPER) of the European Union (EU) are to continue discussions Friday of a Turkish proposal to give limited access to Greek Cypriot trade in return for opening a port and airport to international traffic on the Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus (TRNC).

The committee held one round of discussions over the proposal Thursday, with Eikka Kosonen, the representative of current EU term president Finland, briefing the meeting on the proposal from Ankara.

Under the plan, Turkey would open a port and airport to Greek Cypriot trade in return for opening the Ercan Airport and the port of Magusa in the TRNC to direct traffic. A third arm of the proposal is for the EU to call on the leaders of the two states on the island to push for a comprehensive solution to the Cyprus dispute in 2007, under the auspices of the United Nations.
