Chief of general staff warns about Cyprus:
Vatan yesterday claimed to have revealed the contents of a top-secret letter written by the Deputy Chief of General Staff Gen. Ergin Saygun to Foreign Minister Abdullah Gül. Vatan said the letter's contents were known to only six individuals from the Foreign Ministry “who are the most eminent senior bureaucrats in the ministry.”
According to the report, the letter, sent in November, stated that the recent expectations of the European Union for Ankara to open Turkish ports to Greek Cyprus violated Turkey's Cyprus policy as decided by the National Security Council (MGK).
The letter warned the Foreign Ministry that meeting any of these demands could deal irreparable damage to foreign policy objectives. These policies should not be abandoned, the letter said.
