AROUND 20 pupils aged between 16 and 18 broke into the Latsia Lyceum outside Nicosia yesterday and attacked the school’s pupils, resulting in the injury of three teenagers, the latest in a string of such incidents in the island’s schools.
The school’s management immediately called the police, who have so far questioned ten pupils.
According to police, the invaders from Ayia Varvara in Strovolos had “for insignificant personal reasons” got in a fight with 20 of the school’s pupils. Three were injured and taken to Nicosia General Hospital, where they were treated and discharged.
Ten pupils were soon located by police, who called them to Lycavitos Police Station, where they testified in the presence of their parents. Six of them are to be charged.
“The pupils have admitted to their participation in the specific incident and they will be charged at a later date,” read the police announcement. The pupils also named others involved in the attack.
The school’s headmaster, Charalambos Demetriou, was yesterday unaware of the reasons behind the invasion, but said the problem needed to be faced collectively by the state, society and the education system.
“At around 10.30am, pupils from other schools came to our school and attacked our pupils,” Demetriou told reporters. “To our school’s honour, most of our pupils tried to prevent the fight, along with our teachers and me personally. Three pupils were hurt, but thankfully it wasn't serious. But we couldn't stop some of our pupils who saw their classmates being beaten, and who fought back against the invaders.
“I don't know what the reasons were,” he added.
“It appears that it is considered cool these days for intruders to break into other schools. As a headmaster, and I believe that I am talking on behalf of the entire society, I would like their exemplary punishment.”
Police spokesman Costas Panagi said yesterday, “It is a fact that there has been an increase in violent incidents at schools recently. The police are concerned and trying to stop this sad phenomenon among children.”
Earlier this week, seven pupils were arrested in Larnaca after pupils from three schools were involved in a mass brawl thought to have been sparked by political differences.
Last week, three Turkish Cypriot pupils were injured when a gang of masked youths broke into the English School in Nicosia and attacked them.
Here is another example of stupid immature teens creating trouble.
Why I don't see a 20 page discussion about it? Maybe because this incident can not be used for propaganda?
The truth is that some stupid teens all the need is a lame excuse to start a fight. Beyond that they understand nothing since not only they are immature, but they are the most stupid among the immature.
