I hear that Lidl are going to have a blitz opening of 12 stores overnight across Cyprus sometime in January 2007

Anyone know any details about this ?

Also - whats the latest on Ikea ? Still March 2007 ?

Any info greatly appreciated,

hi there,

I contacted their head office in Cyprus as they should have opened August just gone, they informed me that they wont be opening for at least another two years, i've not seen any building action that could be a store or anything here in Paphos, but if its true that'll be great, i'll keep me fingers crossed.

I have been reading up on these guys lately.

Apparently Lidl like to give false impressions in new markets which they are about to enter. They give their competitors the impression that they are far from opening, then they blitz it and open dozens of stores overnight.

Their buildings are all prefabricated and come ready in containers, usually they can be erected over a period of three weeks.

Cyprus will be their main distribution and 'entry' piont into the middle east and north africa. for this purpose they have secured a huge storage and logistics facility outside nicosia.

So roll on Lidl, I cant wait for that cheap orange juice...and i'm a bit tired of paying sixty quid for two carrier bag's worth of stuff from orphanides !

I heard two years ago that lidl's was after land to build outlets, but also heard that everyone here was up in arms to try and delay them, or stop them completely as it would be so competative and a threat to other stores. I do hope they come here as i too am fed up with the high prices of certain foods. Do they still do tinned food cheap, its been so long since i was in their store, would like to be reminded again of their prices. Anyone got a shopping list for reference?

unique_earthling,

Simply check out LIDL's UK website for prices and offers back here.

Obviously, shipping costs and duty will make items dearer in Cyprus.

However, for comparison, I read that the 'big' operators, like Tesco, work on a clear 7% profit margin, but LIDL, ALDI & NETTO work on 2% (Privately owned - no shareholders to worry about).
