Import Duty on Electronics from US

Postby Ruserious » Fri Nov 24, 2006 2:00 pm

Does Anyone know what the Import Duty is on Electronics (Specifically Camcorders) from the US? The Internet price for newer models make a purchase from the US sound very attractive (depending on the duty). Cheers.

I bought a new bulb for my home cinema projector in the ‘States as it was so much cheaper than Cyprus or buying in the UK.

However, I got stuck for a huge duty charge and VAT which made it much more expensive than buying in the UK and getting it shipped-in.

I can’t remember the exact percentage, but it was probably along the lines of ‘wemakeitupaswegoalongpercent’

i think its 15% of the invoice price (shipping included), and then 15% on top of the total.

if you dont have an invoice you get taxed based on the CY retail price, something you definitely dont want to happen, hehe

Thank you all. The specific model I'm after (HDR-SR1) is in Cyprus over double of the US price, so it is still worth it. Cheers.

I ordered a minidv Camcorder from USA last year. I only paid 15% VAT. The employee of the customs was looking at some books and he said that because it was digital I only had to pay VAT but if it was analogue I would have to pay some duty also :?

They told me they had a limit of CY£50 – anything under that value they didn’t bother with but above it they charged duty.

It has become a lot more difficult to bring things in from the US since Cyprus joined the EU.
