EU warns Turkey time is running out on accession talks

20/11/2006 - 11:30:15 AM

The European Union today warned Turkey that it has to speed efforts to resolve a stalemate in the Cyprus issue if it wants to continue accession talks with the bloc.

Finnish Prime Minister Matti Vanhanen, whose country holds the EU presidency, said Ankara must honour commitments it has made concerning the divided island, including permitting planes and ships from Greek-speaking Cyprus into Turkish ports.

But time is running out. If there is no agreement and Turkey does not honour its commitments, the EU will need to consider the implications for the accession process,” Vanhanen said in Helsinki.

This is not a good scenario and it would mean an uncertain future.”

Vanhanen reiterated that the EU has set a December 6 deadline for Turkey to accept a compromise plan.

If not, EU leaders who are meeting the following week might suspend Turkey’s accession talks.

Today I heard that in Turkey the current and former foreign ministers had a meeting to discuss the situation.

One of the possibilities discussed was that Turkey would withdraw her application herself.

Finally the Turks are realizing that Americans alone are not enough to take them to EU. It was about time. Soon they will realize how costly the occupation of Cyprus can be for them.

Or for you...dont forget the otherside of the coin, a disinterested Turkey means the end hope of any solution in Cyprus. All involved will lose not just Turkey, you are to blind to see this as it doesnt suit you to do so.

the only real strategy we ever had concerning the cyppro was entering the EU. it is the only way we have to excert any pressure on turkey.
so if I were you i wouldnt be so happy if turkey abandonds the EU process.
i dont know why you have this idea that the purpose is to hurt turkey. i am sorry to dissapoint you, but this is not the purpose. if i may remind you the purpose is to solve the cyppro. how else do you propose to solve it ?

even more, a stable and prosperous turkey will be to our benefit in the case we indeed find a solution.

added to that, our mama will be extremelly unhappy if turkey changes course. they have worked hard for the last 7 years to avoid any crisis with turkey, and while they used to be the prime obstacle for turkeys accession, they are now, one of the greatest supporters.

cyper they negated their first signature with the EU. what do you think should happen?

and yes i am of those that thinks turkey will not get in the eu, regardless how much you want it.

the reason is, turkey is second to other countries as far as popoulation is concerned. now you think the europeans are ready to hand out the crown jewels to a poor country with a massive imf debt, in 10-15 years? second largest to be precise. and lets not mention how the turkish army will react with all this freedom of speeches and religion. do you think the europeans will ever accept directions from the military? because they do in turkey and nothing has changed with the salad dressing.

and on another point cyper, if there is no line drawn now, what right will the eu have to expect, expectations form turkey in the future?

in turkey they seem to confuse words like harmonization with sacrifices.

well i would rather be a realist and accept it rather than have vp blackmailing with a disintersted tyrkey. cyper, turkey has been disinterested since she invaded, 32 years ago. this is our only chance, either you go for it or you forget it.

end of the day how much does the eu mean to turkey? and from where i am sitting a lot. otherwise they wouldn't have signed knowing it will blow out to this. they were sweeping it under the carpet and after numerous warnings.
guess what cyper shit has hit the fan, and now they are crying foul. they had ample time to pull out of the eu, but they haven't. eu means a lot to the turks.

and the greek support they get, the turks know how to repay it back. see downed a greek fighter plane not long ago.

end of the day turkey is nowhere fit to join the eu. blind freddy can see this. why do you think citizen poll in the eu is dead said against turkey joining the eu?

and vp i told you before if my grandma had a dick i would be calling her grandpa, you left your common sence with your unwillingness to see anything but your point of view.

I say screw turkey. what have we gained so far? even a simple solution to get them out of the shit they rejected. I bet the eu was expecting this because it was evident what to expect from the turks, the day they were negotiating the accession date. they even went as far as calling erdogan a carpet trader and the eu ain't a bazzar.

on this one we dont think like the europeans (who have every right to think in whatever way they want), but we think as cypriots.

are we talking about the coming deal in december or are we talking about turkish accession process in general ?
look i am not saying that we should not play it hard, on the negotiations for the turkish accession. as i said above, it is the only leverage we have against turkey. what i am arguing against is the attitude of "forget the EU , turks" and laughing about it. i would by crying about it to be honest. not for the turks, but for the cypriots.

and the greek support they get, the turks know how to repay it back. see downed a greek fighter plane not long ago.

precisely!
had this happenned 10 years ago , it would have exploded into another crisis, that could only be solved with american intervention. this time though, the political and military leaders acted fast and as adults and avoided a crisis. and without foreign intervention.
are the big problems between greece and turkey solved ?
ofcource not! but they are improving their relations step by step. they are improving their economic relations, turkish is introduced as an elective in highschools, the two armies agreed for common execrises and cooperation etc etc
and if it werent for us, they would have improved way more

I say screw turkey. what have we gained so far? even a simple solution to get them out of the shit they rejected. the EU deals are always a bazzar. turks do have to admit that they overdo it thought...

may i ask you, pistile how do you suggest we solve the cyppro ?

My take on this:

There is a large juggernaut of a country a mere 80 miles form the shores of Cyprus called Turkey that will always be there irrespective of what happens. Greece is beginning to realise that it's better to have Turkey as an ally rather than an enemy. I'm not excusing Turkey's arrogance towards Cyprus but I absolutely think we need to make strides for the eventual accession of Turkey to the EU for our benefit as much as anything else. Similarly I would urge all TCs to recognise that the RoC is also not just going to go away either and that even if we have partition we will still be sharing this island and what we do on our side will absolutely affect your lives and vice versa.[/quote]

The ONLY benefit we can have from a Turkish accession process is if this process is helping Turkey to make steps towards ending her illegalities in Cyprus.

If Turkey is not making those steps then the ones that gain from such process are only the Turks.

Since the Turks refuse to make any steps, tell me 1 reason why would want the Turkish accession process to continue?

look i am not saying that we should not play it hard, on the negotiations for the turkish accession.

  Play it? Those that "play it" are those that are played. If they know that we will always give up, then whats the point?
