Beginners questions

Postby sandalex » Sun Nov 19, 2006 8:06 pm

Thanks for advice so far greatly appreciated.

Two (probably) obvious things here.
1) We have been told that UK TV sets don't work in Cyprus (Sound 5.5mHz as opposd to 6.0mHz), and also that new sets do, despite the difference. Can anybody give us a definitive answer, please? A recent correspondent was talking about bringing a couple of plasma screens over, but may not have included tuners in the package.
2) Somebody with more Cyprus knowledge than we have (easy done) has told us that developers are not permited to start a build until all sites are sold. This would appear illogical and counter-productive to us, but, again, we don't know.
There must be more people than us out there waiting for a house to be built!

All advice will be appreciated.

Thank you

Hi Sandalex.

I brought a 3 year old wide screen dolby surround sound tv to Cyprus with me when I arrived 2 and a half years ago. I couldn't get any sound out of it on terrestrial TV so I took it to have it converted. It now works apart from not being able to utilise the surround sound. The make of it is a Toshiba. My brother-in-law brought a Philips TV to Cyprus and didn't need to do a thing to it, it worked straight away. I also had to take my Video to get that converted over as well.

There is no retsriction as to when Builders start - providing they have the appropriate Building Permits and Planning Permissions. Some will choose to delay building until all the development is sold as a commercial decision, based on cashflow.

Most modern TV’s will work okay.

But then again, if you are planning a Sky system to watch UK TV it doesn’t matter anyway.

Thank you Hazza, Svetlana and Cyprusgrump.
The building situation is what we expected to hear, but our informant was SO insistent that it was the law...
Sky TV will probably be the route we will go, but right now, we don't really have much idea of what is available on terrestrial. We are planning an extended stay in 2007, so we will get a better idea of what is going on. So far, everything has been done in a bit of a rush, hence the obvious questions which should have been asked before the decision was made. Never mind, we are at an impetuous age!

Hi sandalex

Yes, I know: every foreigner is an 'expert' on property law here LOL!

I have not watched terrestial TV since I have been here; just SKY and DVDs. My Greek speaking friends are pretty unimpr4essed with local TV though! I have a plasma TV without a tuner.

We brought our TV over last year. It was a cheapy widescreen one from ASDA. It works OK, but we can't video any programmes. We are sick of watching Cypriot TV so will get a satellite after Christmas. The only English things we can watch are the films which come on late at night, and the occasional very old English/American TV series. Unless you are a Greek speaker, a satellite is really necessary!
