Humanist, our refugees had tried in the past to go en mass back to their homes. They loaded their cars and pick-up trucks and went up to the road blocks, but of course they were stopped by the occupation army.
Say now a GC refugee hides his belongings in a truck and crosses the green line. When he goes to his home there is a settler or a foreigner illegally living in it. What will he do? If he tries to enter, then he will be arrested by the pseudo police. In the end he will be forced to return back to his temporary residence in the free areas, which could be a TC home.
Now that TC takes his belonging and comes back to his home, say in Limassol. The refugee that was denied to return to his home above currently lives in it. What can be done? Throw the GC refugee in the street? No. Therefore the TC will not be able to return either. Of course in other cases TCs can return, and many of them did already, but it is not always possible.
Now for the sake of argument, say that a few GCs were allowed to return to the occupied areas. What their quality of life would be there? After 1974 a few 1000s of GCs had remained. But they were treated in inhumane ways by the occupation regime and most of them were forced to leave.
Living under occupation of the Turkish army is not easy.
Therefore the solution is not as easy as you think. The solution is for legality to return to Cyprus, for the majority of Settlers to leave, for compensations to be given so homes can be rebuild, and for a well planed operation that will allow refugees to gradually return without creating chaos and conflicts.
