Cross breeding

Postby Eliko » Thu Nov 16, 2006 5:19 am

Marz raises quite an interesting topic regarding the development of a new breed of hunting dog, he states that the breed was started about 30 years ago and hopes it will be registered as a 'pure breed' in the future.
At about the same period in time, Idi Amin expelled the asian community from Uganda and a considerable number of them settled in the U.K.
I assume that a certain amount of genetic engineering produces a new 'pure breed' and wonder what a 'pure breed' Brit may look like in the future, or does cross and inter-breeding only apply to dogs ?.

Nexties says, "No, cross and inter-breeding does not only apply to dogs. However, for humans, unlike dogs, years are certainly insufficient. Genealogically speaking, humans require millennia. The mitochondrial DNA of the most recent common ancestor for all living humans is derived from about 150 millennia in the past native to Ethiopia,
Kenya or Tanzania."

I'm not sure that the concept of "pure breeds" vis-a-vis humans is worthwhile.

Who's going to require us to have ridiculous haircuts and run around mindlessly at shows and whatnot?

Er...well, besides major corporations that we work for...

Just saw this post now.
I think the difference is huge between dogs and humans.

If you know how to breed dogs and then inbreed them, you will constantly get the desired result in overall looks, height, colours, temperament, and hunting ability, (prey drive). Personality will always be different.

who knows maybe inbreeding humans could achieve a similar result.
