Cats!

Postby deedeepuss » Sat Nov 11, 2006 8:44 am

When we were in Cyprus there were lots of cats that appeared stray, and was wondering if there was a problem with the number of strays. When we went to Halkidiki there was a problem with stray cats and dogs. If there are lots of them I was wondering whether a system like they have in Fuerteventura would work and if it would how you would go about setting it up and who you would speak to to ask permission. I believe that there is a lady who has set up a charity to collect money for the stray cats in Fuerte, then once a year she goes over, manages to catch the cats, and get them spayed. The vet also cuts a little corner off their ear, which I am told doesn't have any affect on the cat, so that they know which cats have been neutered and which ones haven't when they take the next batch. I am sure all those people that take cat food down to the cats would consider putting a little bit of money towards helping the long term cat population. I aren't quite sure how you would determine which cat was a stray and which cat had a home but liked to pretend it was a stray, as some of the cats who appeared stray seemed to get full bellies from the tourists!!

There is a program called spay cyprus and also many kind people pick the cats up and take them for spaying. Its an ongoing program but as the problem is so huge by the time you get to do one 100 others have been born, but the problem is a lot better than it was.. Its man power and money thats needed, also educating people to spay and neuter their cats and dogs, which is kinder in the long run...

It looks legit, they have 90 cats and as many kittens at one time. It appears to be based over by Limmasol, it would be wonderful if another one could be set up on the east of the island, there are so many cats. When I was over I looked at the calendars and wondered if that would be a way of fund raising, and low and behold they have their own already produced. I think I will ask around at work and see if I could get people interested in buying them, then do a bulk order, especially with Christmas coming up.

We live in Nicosia and it doesn't seem like there's any kind of program for the cats here. Recently we were in Limassol and it was very obvious that the cats looked much healthier and better taken care of even though they were strays. Does anyone know of something like this in Nicosia area?
