WHAT WOULD HAPPEN IF .......................................

WHAT WOULD HAPPEN IF .......................................

Postby humanist » Fri Nov 10, 2006 11:56 pm

What would really happen if a Non Government Organisation (NGO) facilitated the movement of refugees from both sides back to their homes, properties and villages. A peaceful, loving and caring exchange of properties. Whereby, people register their interest for movement either south or north pending on their circumstances, and the NGO facilitates their move. The NGO approaches the current occupant of the property asks if they are willing to serender it to their rightful owner and if they agree arrangements are made for them to find alternative accommodation in their village of origin. Preferably theirs. What would happen?

Other than a peaceful solution to the Cyprus problem without the politicians.

I think that would be great!
At the end of the day it comes down to the people, if they agree then the governments have nothing to say because the government is there to work for us the people.
I think refugees from both sides want to just go back home and get on with their daily business. It is the people we put in charge that make it more difficult than it has to be.

i also dont really appriciate politicians.
and i am disgusted with the dirty war played against NGOs in cyprus.

but no, an NGO cannot undertake such a project. NGOs are really helpful im many things, but they cannot replace goverments. perhaps they can do better job than the goverment in some specific area /topic , but they should also have limitations. the refuggee problem cannot be solved by an NGO.

I am not sugesting the NGO solve the problem. I am merely asking if it could act as an intermediary between the two people's the ones who live in the house and the ones who ownn the house and wish to return.

I wonder what will happen if people just packed their cars drove to the North or the South and just moved into the home they owned prior to the war. What will happen if thousands did the same.

Anyway all I can say it is sad! that we are in such a mess. I can not believe that the Berlin Wall has tumbled and Cyprus is still divided. Big shame really. More sadly the fact that neither side is letting go of the blame for each other instead of putting energy into becoming a United peoples.

haha, do you think the turks will give up all the properties they stole that easily? you're so naive

besides, we have only a fraction of what they have of ours

last thing left for them to do is list it for sale on www.stealitback.com

I'd like to think of myself as hopeful in human race as opposed to naive. Like if that was to happen would the Turkish troops intervene? I asume that if Turkish Speaking Cypriots were to move to the south the government wont have a problem right> but how would the occupation forces go if Greek Speaking Cypriots movved to the North into thei homes. This ofcourse is a peaceful mission if a Turkish Cypriot living in their home says no then that ought to be it. Hoever if the current tenant says I am willing to move out for the rightful owner to move in ... the what happens?

Interesting idea, but TCs have been free to move South for years. That hardly any have done so indicates that the take-up N to S will be small. And to be an adult in 1974 (i.e to own your own house as opposed to have inherited a house) you must, as a minimum, be in your mid-50s today; probably older. Are that many people really going to want to uproot themselves at that time of life and move away from their friends and family?

I often suspect that there are only 3 types of people who shout about wanting their properties back:
1. Politicians, because super-patriots get votes.
2. People who want to make money.
3. People who are blinded by hatred of Turkish things in general - who should never be allowed back

Oh, maybe too cynical - but not entirely cynical.

Yes I know. It was a hypothetical question and everyone seems to be against it?

Hi Andri, thanks for your reply. I would really like to know what might happen. I heard of an older Greek Speaking Cypriot bloke who has gone back to his village in the North, but what would seriously happen if others decided that is what they want to do also.

Further to my earlier question is the a Turkish Speaking community in the Republic of Cyprus other than the woman who stood in the elections ... sory can't remember her name.

What ever happened to the "englovismenous" Cypriots?
