PARIS: French Foreign Minister Philippe Douste-Blazy said Wednesday the EU should rethink its timetable for membership talks with Turkey if Ankara fails to recognize Cyprus by the end of the year.
"If by the end of the year Turkey still does not recognize the 25 member states, notably including Cyprus, then it appears to me necessary to rethink the timetable for the adhesion of Turkey to the European Union," the minister told lawmakers.
The European Commission issued a report Wednesday's on Turkey's progress towards meeting EU conditions, and said it has decided against recommending the immediate suspension of membership talks with Ankara. However, it criticized Turkey's human rights record and lack of political reforms, and said Turkey must implement a customs pact with Cyprus by mid-December — or face possible suspension of the entry talks.
