i was wondering how much money you can carry with you on the plane before you have to declare it.. i think its something like 10k undiclared and anything over that you have to declare? (when you land in cy)

is it the same amount for gold or other precious metals?

I've brought over £8000 in gb cash a couple of times -- I wouldn't recommend it -- too risky.

One time was before Cyprus joined the EU and I declared it on arrival-( the customs guy made me count it out on his desk and wanted to know what I was going to use it for ) --- the second time was last year and I just walked through without saying anything as we are in the EU.

I must admit I've never felt really comfortable carrying large amounts of cash -- even more so as I walk to the station -- travel on two seperate trains -- then hang around the airport for ages before boarding my flight.

I wonder what happens when you put them in one of those little trays to go through the X-Ray machine in the US; will they appear the other side or will the machine magically make them vanish?

Make sure you have all the paperwork for them, if they think your "money laundering" they will relieve you of the bars at customs.

Don't melt them down as they won't take liquids on board. Just make sure they are in resealable plastic bags and there should be no problem....

You can of course bring in as much cash as you like; you just need to declare it to Customs if it exceeds 12,000 Euros.

The official amount that you can carry over borders within EU without declaring the funds is UNDER 10 000 Euros’ worth (app 6,700 GBP) per person. For more information, please see:

Should you need any more information about transferring funds, please email me direct.

Bill, if you can please provide a photo of yourself and dates of when you are next coming to Cyprus with a large amount of cash, it will be appreciated. Thanks!
