A-JET (Formerly Helios Airways)

I don't know whether this information has been posted elsewhere on the forum, but last night I was speaking with a friend of mine that works at Larnaca Airport, and he tells me that all A-JET operations have been suspended with immediate effect.
With the recent announcement by A-JET that they would carry on operations for a further 3 months before closing down, and having read on the forum (somewhere) that people have booked for flights to Cyprus from the UK at Christmas, this is not good news!
Apparantly this situation was publicised in the Cyprus Mail on Thursday or Friday.

Why is this?

I was advised not to travel with these guys ages ago. It must be fairly serious stuff though to be suspended.

I heard that it was because they owed so much money to the government.

They government have grounded the planes until they pay the money back which they probably wont be able to do.

I think that if you are closing down you are closing down and this whole 3 more months thing doesnt make sense. They owe the government millions of dollars and they are not safe so who cares. Just find someone else to fly with.

We always fly with BA, but we are rather limited as we fly from Manchester. There are some charter flights, but we prefer to use scheduled airlines. Cyprus Airways are also pretty good, but don't have flights convenient for us.

Ajet just called me in the Uk to tell me my return flight (tomorrow) no longer existed! Very helpful! Fortunately, had already booked to return on Cy airways.

Friends of mine with an Ajet flight to Birmingham on 1 December have been advised on the phone by Ajet that the flight will not be honoured and they are advised to contact their credit card company.

RBS are insisting in having evidence that AJET is in liquidation first. (is that available to customers?)

And a copy of the booking confo.

Basically book another flight and claim back from the banks.

Announcement

The Government of the Republic of Cyprus last week illegally detained Ajet’s Aircraft and froze the Company’s bank accounts, which was in direct contravention to the successful appeal lodged by Ajet in the District Court, causing substantial financial damage to the Company.

As a result Ajet regrets to announce that all flights that were scheduled to be operated by other Carriers to all destinations, will no longer be operating as of Monday 06/11/2006. All passengers will therefore have to make their own arrangements.

The Company wishes to clarify the following:
• For flights from London Luton, Manchester, Birmingham and London Gatwick all passengers that booked via a travel agent should get in touch with their travel agent for further information.
• All passengers who have booked through the Ajet website are requested to make a claim (in writing only) for a refund through Ajet and once the Company is in a position to do, it will review all refund applications.
• All passengers travelling on Ajet as part of an organised package are requested to contact their tour operator for further information.

Ajet wishes to apologize sincerely to all passengers for the inconvenience, which is solely the result of the actions of the Ministry of Communications and Works as well as the Department of Civil Aviation in Cyprus.

For further information please contact us on 0870 750 2750 during office hours.

I would suggest not waiting for them to "look into" refunding your money and disputing the charges with your credit card company.

The Credit Card Issuers are bound by Mastercard and Visa Scheme Rules. It is failure to supply goods and services. Card Issuer raises a chargeback. And also the Consumer Credit Act for transactions over £100. Technically charge cards are not covered by CCA but some issuers don't argue. It's far more complex than that but people who pay by CC should be covered one way or another provided claim made within, I think. 45 days? That's one scheme and less for the other?

But Ajet has not gone bust yet which is why I think that it might be difficult to get evidence of liquidation for the bank.

But failure to supply goods and services? Yes. So a chargeback?
