How many ?????

Postby Bill » Thu Nov 02, 2006 9:27 am

Can someone tell me how many Greek Cypriots live in the north and how many Turkish Cypriots live in the south at this moment in time.
I don't want an exact number -- just a general estimate will do.

Me too

I know there are lots of Turkish Cypriots come over to work in the south on the building sites and some must live there .

There must also be Greek Cypriots living in the north.

Greek Cypriots in the North, hardly any. A scattering of elderly people in the east; A few more, mostly elderly Maronite Christians, in the Morphou area. If there are more than a few hundred I would be surprised.

Turkish Cypriots in the South, again a few hundred tops.

Cypriots everywhere, and it would be nicer if we were all that.

What I would like to know is why Turkish Speaking Cypriots are allowing their fate to be determined by Turkey? If someone can give an answer to that, it would be greatly appreciated.

It is my undertsanding that Constantinople is a thriving modern city. How thriving is any city in the Northern Cyprus.

Instaed of blaming the Cypriot people perhaps Cypriot leaders in the North ought to look at who really is supprssing them ........ Turkey perhaps?

The now occupied northern part of Republic of Cyprus is the homeland of about 200.000 Greek Cypriots and 50.000 Turkish Cypriots.
The remaining of the Republic of Cyprus is the homeland of about 500.000 Greek Cypriots and 100.000 Turkish Cypriots.
After the invasion in 1974 most of the 200.000 Greek Cypriots had been ethnically cleansed by the Turkish army and most of Turkish Cypriots went to the occupied areas since they believed that their dream of partition was coming true.

A few 1000s of GCs remained in the occupied areas after the invasion but soon they were forced to leave. Now only a few 100s of old Greek Cypriots live there.

After 2003 some TCs started to come back to the free areas but I am not sure about their number. Probably a few 1000s so far. Also there are some Cypriot gypsies (who choose to belong to the Turkish Cypriot community) who had been living in the occupied areas before and after 2003 they started to come to the south.

So a few 100s of GCs live in the occupied areas and a few 1000s of TCs in southern Cyprus now.
