Name Day Party

Postby sal » Tue Oct 31, 2006 1:55 pm

As I'm learning Greek I thought it would be a cool idea to have my own 'Name Day' Party. I know that in Greece/Cyprus some people even celebrate these more than actual Birthdays!

So, has anyone any ideas as to what I actually do? Are there any traditional dishes to make? What's the itenary of such an occasion in terms of tradition? Or is it just a big excuse for a random piss up? Which is fine too!

Any help as always very gratefully received!

Name days come from the church calendar, for example "Agios Nikolas" (Saint Nicholas), "Agios Georgios" and so on...
Whats your name? there are a lot of calendars online where u can find your name day.

I found the date through a calendar online and it's in December so I need some ideas for what to do - traditions and what I'm meant to do, recipes etc - that kind of thing.

Thanks!

And any recommendations of Greek music I could play would be brilliant too! Could be modern or traditional - any CDs that are widely available or downloadable...

Thanks as ever!

Our tradition at work is just to buy cakes for everyone. some people have made cakes, brought in sandwiches and chocolates... it's up to you, but you should treat others.

Have a good day :)

Name days

Hi Sal
If your name had been John, it would have cost you a fortune.
I was told that the name has over twenty days to celebrate.

Well any excuse for a party I say! You should get on it!

And thanks Twinkle for the reply with the cakes - when I worked in an office we used to bring in cakes on our birthdays.
I was thinking of inviting lots of friends around and making a big Meze meal for everyone with Ouzo and greek music. Would this be similar to what people do in Cyprus?

I wouldnt say we have parties on our name days really. We just treat people at work, or at school stuff like that. So having a prty wouldnt be what people do in Cyprus anyway! Just do it your way and you will have fun :D
