Shame on you!

How can we solve it? (keep it civilized)

It is part of the forum rules that everything is supposed to be in English or something with an english translation.

Hello,

As per our rules:

English is the only language allowed - You may post phrases or words in other languages only if an accurate translation is provided within the same post.

This rule is not created to accommodate the British expats but to facilitate communication between all people of Cyprus. English is widely spoken on our island by both Greek and Turkish Cypriots as well as by most other people that live here.

Strahd, please send me a translation of your intial post. I will then edit the post and unlock the thread. If anybody else wants to provide the translation that would be fine as well.

Thanks

Here is the article from Cyprus Mail

TURKISH Cypriot daily Kibris newspaper yesterday reported that the ‘Aid Delegation Chairmanship of the Turkish Envoy’ in the occupied areas had announced that it would provide financial aid worth 1.5million Turkish Lira (£500,000) for the restoration and rearrangement of the surroundings and annexes of the Apostolos Andreas Monastery.

This, the paper said, would be done with the aim of promoting religious tourism in the north.

Chairman of the Aid Delegation Mehmet Ilhan told the daily that the 60-room annexes around the Monastery were in a dilapidating state and the aim was to renovate them and turn them into a 120-room hotel, providing thus extra income for the region.

Ilhan added that in order to start implementing the project they would need the approval of the Vakif and the illegal municipality.

Sorry for the off topic but I find it unacceptable in the 21st century for a Cypriot to think that Cyprus has English as one of its official languages.

In case you forgot English is no longer an official language of the Republic of Cyprus. The Republic has only two official languages Greek and Turkish and the most widely understood language in Cyprus is Greek since it is spoken by all Greek Cypriots and a large portion of Turkish Cypriots who I am pretty sure they would rather speak to Greeks in Greek than in English as I would love to be able to speak in Turkish to them. For your information there are many Cypriots, either Greeks or Turks that do not speak English.

The use of english in this forum is to accomodate the intercommunal discussions and not for brittish expats or charlies to understand what we are saying because frankly we don't give a damn about their opinion.

Cypezokyli you disappoint me.

Constitution of the Republic of Cyprus
Appendix D
Part I
Article 3
Par 1

1. The official languages of the Republic are Greek and Turkish.

end of story...

Going back to the original story Apostolos Andreas is a UNESCO World Heritage Site, so surely they won;t be able to do too much to change the appearance.

Bit sickening though that it could end up as a holiday resort around that area. The whole of Cyprus, occupied areas too, will sink into the sea under a huge mound of concrete. Way tooooo much developments going on. :(

Strange tho isnt it, on most cypriot websites, they can be viewed only in greek or english... or turkish and english...

So somebody must think english is important enough for the community

Well said 'raymanuva !' let the superior minded Brits demonstrate their superiority by learning to read, write and speak the language of their host nation, for too long have they assumed that they are entitled to expect every nation to adopt theirs, it should be relatively easy for them since the majority of significant phrases, particularly in mathematical, medical and scientific terms, are , (dare I say 'Borrowed') from several ancient and cultured races throughout the world. Incidentally, have you noticed that the English language seems to be the only one where an argument may be resolved, not by the elevation of speech but by the use of offensive remarks, it would appear that in order to overcome your opponents view, a few well chosen expletives will put you in the high-ground.
