ONE OF the world’s largest warships, the USS Dwight D. Eisenhower, affectionately known as ‘Ike’, docked at Limassol port yesterday, for what was officially described as an opportunity “for America to thank Cyprus for its support during the Lebanon crisis”.
Cyprus was heavily involved in the evacuation Lebanon, providing vessels and aircraft, as well as being one of the main launch pads for the humanitarian relief effort.
The 333m aircraft carrier will spend four days in Limassol, allowing the 5,000 crew members to take leave and attend various events organised around the island. The aircraft carrier has a 4.5-acre flight deck to support as many as 100 aircraft. The ship’s two nuclear reactors can provide energy for more than 18 years of operation without refuelling. The USS Eisenhower is 24 storeys tall and as long as the Empire State Building.
There has been a flurry of naval manoeuvres in the Persian gulf recently, which has caused speculation that the US are planning to move naval fleets to within striking distance of Iran. ‘Ike’, would almost certainly be involved in any such operation in the Middle East. However the US embassy were unavailable to comment on such speculation.
The 31-year-old vessel has only recently taken to the water again, following an extensive four-year overhaul, reportedly costing in the region of $2.5 billion. The recent re-deployment was earlier than expected, further fuelling speculation that the ship is indeed heading towards the Persian Gulf.
The crew of the ship will be taking part in a number of events around the island, such as helping to paint the Theotokos Foundation (school for children with special needs), and taking on the National Guard basketball team.
