Hi
I am new to the forum, and am finding lots of useful information. Has anyone bought or know anything about a company called BUYABROAD? We are looking to relocate, and have read lots of info about doing our homework before moving, and thought here might be a good place to start. Any other pointers would be greatly appreciated.

Hello Dee

We are moving to Cyprus 2007 and have found the help from Carine at Acklimatise so useful - takes the hard work and worries away a little.

Hi Niki

We found a property with BUYABROAD whilst we were on holiday recently, and found them to be very good. They were very professional before we went out, and whilst we were there they were excellent. The property we are looking at will be ready for July 2008, so you will have been there a year by the time we get there. My partner and I have confidence in the company, but you hear such horror stories. Were you able to find out much about the company before buying? Are you using their lawyer or your own? I have read that you should choose your own lawyer, but we feel comfortable with them. They are going to send the contracts over for my solicitor (who is my cousin) to look at, so felt this would be OK. It is such a big step to take. I hope all goes well with your move, keep me posted :D Which part of Cyprus are you moving to?

Hi Dee

Acklimatise is a relocation company who recommends agents, solicitors, accountants etc and Carine is wonderfully unbiased. She also arranged us to view schools and helps with little things such as electricity, rates, health insurance which is such a minefield.

We are moving to Limassol in July and will rent for a year so we can have a good look round and choose the right property, lawyers etc before we buy. I will try BUYABROAD though. Having been to Cyprus a few times it is amazing how many people are 'estate agents' or who have relatives who are estate agents! You have to be so careful.

There are a number of people on this forum who are very knowledgable. Svetlana (Lana) the administrator and Nigel Howarth help people with property matters among other things and are a great source of knowledge.

Best wishes

Hi Dee

My advice - rent first for a year, get to know the areas & towns.

If you buy first & don't like the area etc - it can take a long time to sell.

Hi Deedeepuss

Regarding lawyesr, I assume your cousin lawyer is in the UK? You will need a lawyer in Cyprus, who understands the deep differences between UK and Cypriot property law (primarily Title Deeds) and of course searches have to be done 'in Greek'.

You may 'feel comfortable' with BUYABROAD but of course your Contract will be with a Third Party - the developer and it is with them you will have a legal relationship - not BUYABROAD.

Lana Briefly Administrator, thanks Niki :-)

Hi

Thank you all for the info, I will check out that website. The lawyer we have is from Cyprus, we just felt that if it was looked at by someone over here that it might be helpful. We have met with the developer and found them to be very good so far. I don't have any reason to doubt anyone, just a little anxious as I have never done this before. I am sure everything will be fine.

Hi deedeepuss,

Re: BuyAbroad, my wife and I live in Nicosia, but my folks used BuyAbroard to get their villa in Kavo Greko. ( http://villakos3.googlepages.com/home ) They are effectively the middle men, between British buyers and Cypriot contacts.-Developers, lawyers, furniture suppliers etc.

We found there services excellent. They were very impartial, offered great advice and couldn't help enough. The suppliers and contacts they provided us with really are the real deal.

As I said, my wife (who is Cypriot) and I, live here so we were able to better judge the validity of the resources BuyAbroard were offering. And as it turned out everything was great. In particular the Lawyer recommended to us is of particular note. He's well respected here in Cyprus and is responsible for writing a regular article, regarding property law, in one of the national newspapers. Like I said, all very good stuff.

I'm not sure if BuyAbroad have more than the agents we dealt with but if you get the chance ask for Steve & Sherida Cooper.

Hope this settles some nerves and your move works out well. :)

Hi Jez

Thank you so much for replying. We are dealing with Steve and Sherrida, they are such a lovely couple. You have really put my mind at ease. Hellen in the UK and Steve and Sherrida over there have really been very supportive, but having not done anything like this before I am obviously very anxious. Everyone keeps asking if we have done our homework, but to be honest we have really gone with our instincts. We are looking at buying on a new development in Sotira. We have had such an awful year with one thing and another that now we are able to make the move we felt the time was right. If we don't do it soon we will be too old and probably never do it and live to regret it. I think we will be OK job wise as my partner is a chef and I have a background in hotels, now work in a college and have some beauty courses behind me, but am hoping to do a few more courses before we move. Hopefully we should be able to find something to pay the bills. :?

I appreciate your comments, thanks.
