Carrefour quality?

Postby Sotos » Sat Oct 21, 2006 1:02 am

Cyprus authorities have destroyed some 4,5 tonnes of beef, pork and lamb which they deemed as “unsuitable for consumption” after seizing the meat from the stores of Chris Cash and Carry/Carrefour Group.

Agriculture Minister Photis Photiou said the meat, originating from Germany, France and the U.K., was seized on October 10 to 14 and subsequently destroyed.

Most of the meat was seized in all the coastal towns where the supermarket chain has stores, with the exception of a “minimal quantity” seized from an unnamed store in Nicosia.

Photiou said that all meat imports have a shelf or store life of about 10 to 20 days, but with the passing of time they start to change colouring and exert unusual smells.

He said that most vulnerable to such changes are the quantities of meat arriving from overseas, as in order to reach the Cyprus supermarkets they need a further week from the time of slaughter to shipment.

The Minister said the inspection by the Health Services took place at the storage facilities of the said supermarket chain.

He added that consumers should also be aware and should carefully inspect the meat before they buy it and to look out for the colouring and smell.

This is worrying. I tried some Carrefour products like cereals. They are cheap but their quality is low. What do you think about this chain?

Oh dear. Bought some 'english' beef from Carrefour. When we cooked it, it had a slightly 'odd' herby taste, (not dissimilar to the local lamb) that made me wonder if it was also actually local (not a criticism of local lamb!). Now kind of wondering if it was odd tasting for another reason!

An herby taste is one thing, zoopigi man. If it tastes like ass, it's time to run!

By the way, we have lots of raw spinach to go with the tainted beef over here. And at bargain prices - 85% off! If the tainted beef gets you, the e coli from the spinach will wash it all out.

I think it is better to buy meat, fish, vegetables and fruits from specialized shops than from these big supermarkets!

we never buy our fruit and veg from CCC, we are in Larnaca area and use the fruit/veg shop across the street from CCC.. it's always fresh (daily) and huge variety. The local fruit/veg and meats in CCC are disgusting.. rotten veggies, mushy fruit.. who would eat this? The meat is either rump rump, or ... more Rump steak.. have they never heard of a serloin or fillet steak?? For this reason, we rarely ever shop there anymore. Plus, is it just me, or are the prices getting higher there??

Chris CC is getting worse in my opinion
They constantly change smth with their design, interior but quality of products is worsening. Recently I wanted to buy some tomatoes there but there were just several of them in the basket and all green, unripe plus rotten :? :?
I tried some cereals Carrefour too, and didn't like it, all raisins were stuck together :?
I also don't like when supermarkets start to rearrange their shelves and position of the products. What for?
It just pisses me off. You waste your time walking around the shop trying to find what you need :x

I've noticed these changes in CCC, i am no sure if they'll stay open liek this for long. First of all, shopping rush-hour had no people in it + 5 available cashiers. Something is not right... Fruit/Vegetable Section is terrible, everything is unorganised, they keep changing their design every time i go upstairs etc... I might be paying almost double at my butchers, but i atleast i am getting fresh local stuff, same goes for Fruit markets...

We have found some of the CCC frozen goods are either only half frozen in the freezers, or have signs of being re-frozen (i.e. lots of flaky ice all over them). We also bought some meat there which went off in a day. But more surprisingly, this weekend we bought three bottles of their own Sauvignon which they had on offer. All three bottles were brown and stinking !! No wonder they were cheap. Completely off !
