I don't agree. I feel British people are becoming more patriotic, and becoming more identified with their own areas (i.e. Scotland/England/Wales), but I do feel that we demonstrate our patriotism in a very basic manner. Wearing football tops and carrying St George's flags as towels is not patriotism. Take Spain as an example. Every autonomous area of Spain speaks it's own language, has it's own identity, and they are all fiercely patriotic , whilst insisting that they are all (ALSO) Spanish (a few catalans and Basques being the exception). I am Scottish and proud, my wife is Greek and proud of it also. But we are both also proud to live in Cyprus and try to be part of the country and culture.

....that was in response to patriotism....

However...my son was born in Greece, and has the right to Greek, British AND Cypriot nationality, as my wife is half Cypriot. But stick with British if you want to avoid the National military service...!!

And why is every Brit I speak to so critical of their country, envying those who live abroad?

SIMON WROTE: "" And why is every Brit I speak to so critical of their country, envying those who live abroad "

Because successive British Governments have demoted the British culture and encouraged multi bloody culturism and allowed the introduction of faith schools in our traditionally secular society. The nation is bracing it self for the day or rather days of reckoning . The British people have been lied to continually , our Health service , once the envy of the world is run by money motivated individuals who care mostly about making as much out of the NHS as possible. The surgical removal of self inflicted tattoos is costing our NHS some 300 million a year. What a bloody joke has our nation become.Get pregnant , have a kid and get a flat , a kid without a father without a family in most cases tomorrows hooligans.

To be honest I do feel that Scotland, Ireland and Wales are very patriotic (and quite right too) but when you are from from England you are made to feel guilty about saying you are English rather than British - every time I say "English" I feel a pang of guilt!!! Why is that - is it the indoctrination as you are growing up?

When a good friend from Glasgow and I first met I was amazed at the strength of feeling that there was somehow a difference and how feelings run deep. To me there was no difference (she was just a really great friend) and it was a shock to have it pointed out.

It feels as though Scotland, Wales and Ireland are allowed to do this but not the English.

I feel the same about everybody in the UK - Muslims, West Indians - whatever. No difference to me but many of the the 'minorities' seem so determined to be different. What a shame!

It might have something to do with the perceived way the English treated the rest

You are probably right but this is certainly not the way most "English' people feel now. The autocratic 'rulers' did the common people no good at all - similar to how the Cyprus Problem has been created.

Yes I agree, that is why I said perceived. People see you that way, because of the past. It is not fair, and it will change, I hope, but it wont be any time soon :(
